1996 VINTAGE in Burgundy

Maturity levels were in general high following a long hot summer. The wines from the famous Pinot Noir have an intense ruby red colour with lush red fruit aromas. They are wines that are comparable with the outstanding 88s and 89s. Written Notes

Fine pale yellow colour with a faint green aspect. Green apple, mineral nose with an edge of honey. The apples and the honey come from the acidity and oxidative character of the vintage; the minerality is the vineyard speaking. Rather awkward and untogether at first, but improved quite noticeably in the glass. There is enough fruit to cover the undoubted acidity. 

Some development on the colour. Full and vigorous and ready for drinking on the nose. Yet almost yeasty. Rich and meaty on the palate. Slightly evolved fruit but good grip behind it. This almost suggests a red wine vinified as white, for, like Champagne, I get red fruit here, plus quite a lot of volume. Very good grip. Yet very ripe. Atypical. A wine for food. But veal or chicken, not fish. More 1996 than Genevrières. Fine. Ready.
