The Story

The vines were planted in two stages by Auguste and Pierre Morey. They are old, weak vines producing little (between 20 and 35 hl/ha). Badly affected by fan-leaf degeneration, they have improved considerably since the application of biodynamic preparations. The parcel is situated at the far south of Montrachet also facing south. The soil is fairly dark, quite deep and stony. It consistently produces wines rich in alcohol, balanced out by their...

Vintage 2019

“2019 is ‘the perfect storm’ of a vintage,” said Laurent Drouhin of top negociant house Drouhin, which owns vineyards in many parts of Burgundy. “We keep smiling because some wines will be great.” The mix included the hottest temperatures since the time of the Black Death 700 years ago (!), frost in April, rain in June, and no rain for nearly four months.

Drouhin’s harvest started on time on Sept. 13, and Laurent’s winemaking brother Freder...

Written Notes

The first encounter with this wine is a sensory delight. The bouquet is a captivating blend of floral elegance and fruit opulence. Aromas of white flowers, particularly acacia and honeysuckle, intertwine with the seductive perfume of ripe orchard fruits.

On the palate, the Lafon Montrachet 2019 displays an exquisite balance of richness and precision. The fruit profile echoes the aromas, with an abundance of stone fruits, including ripe apricots and succulent nectarines. The palate evolves seamlessly, revealing layers of flavor that mirror the nuances found on the nose.

The finish is a lingering crescendo of flavors that gradually tapers, leaving a lasting impression of finesse. A mineral-driven salinity emerges in the final moments, lending structure and purity to the wine's extended farewell.

Suggested Food Pairing: This remarkable Chardonnay is well-suited to accompany a range of gourmet dishes. Pair it with butter-poached lobster, seared scallops with a citrus beurre blanc, or a decadent truffle risotto. It also harmonizes beautifully with artisanal cheeses, particularly those with creamy textures and subtle earthiness.

There are four-and-a-half barrels – or, to be exact, three pièces and one 350-liter puncheon – of the 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru this year, compared to the usual six or seven. More significantly, Dominique Lafon told me that the 2019 is the final vintage to be raised entirely in new oak before being racked into used oak after 12 months, the 2020 being matured in 50% new and 50% used oak. This new direction is partly influenced by his son and daughter taking the first steps in directing the domaine and Lafon, to use his own words, questioning his modus operandi and trying a new approach. The tender, fragrant bouquet offers white peach and glimpses of white chocolate and saffron, displaying wonderful mineralité and precision. The harmonious palate is well balanced with fine tension and a subtle and not unwelcome creaminess to the texture. Lightly spiced, offering crushed rock and hints of tangerine, this is a beautifully composed Montrachet that lingers seductively in the mouth. Aristocratic. 96-98p
