The Story

In 2011, Coppola successfully reclaimed the Inglenook trademark so that his Rubicon Estate in Rutherford could revert back to its historic original name.

At the same time, he hired winemaker Philippe Bascaules, previously of Bordeaux first growth Château Margaux, as estate manager and winemaker, with Stéphane Derenoncourt continuing as consultant winemaker for the estate.

The last wine in this second flight had a gorgeous nose with aromas of wafer, caramel and a touch of mint. I was convinced this was from Italy due to its heavy leather and tar in the nose. Someone found it ‘balsamic,’ but its palate had more Cali Cabernet in that Ridge Monte Bello direction. ‘Mint chocolate’ flavors combined with caramel and a stony, gritty finish in this 1952 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon Cask J-9. Well done (93).

1952 Inglenook - 96pts. I can smell this dusty, earthy wine from about 3 feet from me while the decanter fills it into my glass. Thank you. Stiff competition next the unknown 1953 (which ended up to be Mouton), wow this wine really is hanging in there with the 1953. What could this be, considering '52 wasn't truly famous anywhere in the world. Go back to the nose...truly rich and riper, but not coffee so Spain is out...This wine has to be very fine old California, and most likely from my home Napa Valley. The color is very vibrant but a bit thin garnet color, like semi precious instead of true ruby. But wait, on the palate, what a gentle and caressing fine tannin load. This wine was built properly for the beginning and you know it had the heat long enough to ripen, so yes it has to be Napa. Brilliant acidity is really making me love this wine, why can't we make them like this in today's era? This alcohol has to be under 13%. Not too much bret, so its not BV Latour.... and then as the wine is revealed, alas yes Has to be the work of John Daniel's hand.....It's Inglenook Cask. I want to make a wine this good from Napa Valley some day.
