The Story

In 2011, Coppola successfully reclaimed the Inglenook trademark so that his Rubicon Estate in Rutherford could revert back to its historic original name.

At the same time, he hired winemaker Philippe Bascaules, previously of Bordeaux first growth Château Margaux, as estate manager and winemaker, with Stéphane Derenoncourt continuing as consultant winemaker for the estate.

1938 Inglenook 94pts - Incredible rarity tonight, from a half bottle I acquired from a "Bohemian gentleman." This little 375ml is filled to mid shoulder, so this is a real dice roll. The cork disintegrates at the mere sight of the corkscrew. But lo and behold, this little bottle has survived a history that began the year the Third Reich annexed Austria. I love this part about antique wine drinking - this is history man!! The able hands of Inglenook's wine making team built this '38 Cabernet sauvignon to last. The color is a brown brick with ruddy purple hues. Incredible immediate nose of redwood and cedar and tobacco pouch, mint and dust shriveled blackberry. Holy cow this smells like a cow too. But then as the wine has more air it evolves quickly to give off little purple flower notes, and redwood planter box with just-watered soil, with wilted wild flowers. In the mouth this is something I have never tasted, its a bloody iron rich viscosity, and the wine is completely sound to my hope and joy, and still very lively with bottom of the bucket blackberry flavors. Wonderful height of acidity makes drink linger and last. My favorite pre WW2 California I've ever had. Consumed at Meadowood Resort in Saint Helena with the greatest company one could ask for in Pekka, Juha, Denis, Maybritt and Jared.
