The Story

Masseto was born ‘almost by chance’ in 1986 when it was decided to vinify the Merlot from the Masseto vineyard alone as it ‘promised well’. This small, exceptional and legendary cru has soon become a collector’s item sold in auctions all over the world. Climate and Harvest 1996

The Spring of 1996 had below average temperatures which caused a delay in budding. The Merlot variety budded 24/25 May. Temperatures in the Summer were fairly stable but not excessively hot. Written Notes

he 1996 Masseto is austere, wild and savory, none of which are especially typical. Even so, the 1996 is endowed with considerable depth. Graphite, grilled herbs, game, smoke, licorice and tobacco add to its wild feel. The 1996 is not especially refined, but it has a ton of character. It was a mostly cool and rainy year, with just a bit of heat at the end.

  • 91p
A clear, rather intense, slightly developed reddish-brown colour. Very well developed nose, with earthy root notes, fruit essences, ripe, dark berries, cedar, mocha and chocolate. This is a big, medium-bodied wine, with medium acids, ripe, supple and soft tannins and a medium ripe fruitiness.
