The Story

Masseto was born ‘almost by chance’ in 1986 when it was decided to vinify the Merlot from the Masseto vineyard alone as it ‘promised well’. This small, exceptional and legendary cru has soon become a collector’s item sold in auctions all over the world. The first vintage was called very simply ‘Merlot’ but, from 1987, it has taken on the name of its vineyard ‘Masseto’.

Written Notes

The 2021 Masseto opens with a luxurious and deeply seductive bouquet: black cherry, ripe plum, blueberry coulis, and wild blackberry, lifted by nuances of violet, lavender, sweet tobacco, and warm Tuscan earth. Subtler notes of dark chocolate, cedar, graphite, and espresso bean weave themselves into the background, adding polish and dimension.

On the palate, the wine is sumptuous yet composed, offering Masseto’s hallmark velvet texture wrapped around brilliant purity of fruit. Layers of black cherry liqueur, mulberry, ripe fig, and cocoa-dusted raspberry glide effortlessly across the mid-palate. Beneath the opulent fruit lies a refined mineral core — saline, iron-tinged, and quietly powerful — grounding the wine with depth and tension.

The tannins are ultra-fine, silky, and impeccably integrated, creating a seamless, almost weightless structure that belies the wine’s concentration. The acidity is vibrant and perfectly measured, giving the wine lift, precision, and long-term harmony.

As it unfolds, hints of truffle, bay leaf, sandalwood, and sweet spice appear, echoing through an exceptionally long and graceful finish.

A magnificent Masseto — sumptuous, pure, and beautifully sculpted, showcasing both the richness of the site and the finesse of the 2021 vintage.

A treasure already, and destined to shine for 30+ years.

Blueberries and black olives with violets and hints of sage, as well as rosemary flowers. Full and powerful with lots of fruit and vanilla on the palate. A rich and flavorful red, yet held together beautifully. Muscular and powerful. Needs five or six years to come together. Give it time.
