The Story

Masseto was born ‘almost by chance’ in 1986 when it was decided to vinify the Merlot from the Masseto vineyard alone as it ‘promised well’. This small, exceptional and legendary cru has soon become a collector’s item sold in auctions all over the world. The first vintage was called very simply ‘Merlot’ but, from 1987, it has taken on the name of its vineyard ‘Masseto’.

The Masseto vineyard is a unique place. Blessed with the generosity of a...

Wine Information

Climate and Harvest 1999

Winter was slightly colder than in 1998, with budbreak delayed until around late March. During Spring temperatures and rains were within the norm, with flowering and growth similar to the previous year. Flowering took place at the end of May. The excellent climate during late Spring resulted in a better-than-average fruit set. A hot Summer without rain led to veraison one week earlier than in previous vintages, with...

Written Notes

Saturated, moderately intense dark purple colour. Seductive and opulent nose is fully open and serves up plenty of toasty oak, roasted coffee beans and liquorice. The palate is s very forward and ripe whilst fresh with vivid acidity and firm, quite tough tannins. A ripe and intense blackberry taste combined with lovely toasty and spicy flavours of new, sweet oak. The long, structured aftertaste leaves a really fleshy taste.

Well, there is a lot of competition in this flight. The 1999 Masseto is another epic wine. Swaths of tannin give the 1999 a real sense of energy to match its decidedly virile, inward personality. Dark and brooding, the 1999 doesn’t quite have the volume of the 2001, the power of the 2006 nor the finesse of years like 2004, but it is nevertheless superb in a slightly burlier style than those wines.

This is sometimes overlooked by Masseto lovers. It shows the precision and finesse of a top Masseto with firm tannins and bright blueberry and violet character with a long fresh finish. It's full-bodied, and so very polished with wonderful texture. Drink or hold. Decant a couple of hours before serving.

A clear, medium-intensity ruby red colour. The nose is generous, offering notes of ripe dark berries, walnut, smoke, spices and new oak. A full-bodied and very essential palate. Medium acids, soft ripe tannins and a very ripe fruitiness, which is complemented by toast and seasoned oak notes. In the finish the ample alcohol leaves a warm and glycerol-like trace. This wine is very juicy and reminiscent of a port wine. It lacks a certain degree of refinement and complexity. Do not cellar long.
