The Story

Masseto was born ‘almost by chance’ in 1986 when it was decided to vinify the Merlot from the Masseto vineyard alone as it ‘promised well’. This small, exceptional and legendary cru has soon become a collector’s item sold in auctions all over the world. The first vintage was called very simply ‘Merlot’ but, from 1987, it has taken on the name of its vineyard ‘Masseto’.

Written Notes

In the glass, Masseto 2016 displays a deep, almost opaque ruby-red color, indicating its concentration and vitality. The nose is an enchanting bouquet of rich, ripe fruit. It offers an abundance of black fruits, with blackberries, dark cherries, and plums taking center stage. There's an intriguing combination of floral notes, such as violets and roses, intermingled with hints of dried herbs and exotic spices. Subtle oak undertones add a touch of vanilla and complexity to the aromatic profile.

On the palate, Masseto 2016 is a masterpiece of balance and elegance. It boasts a full-bodied yet refined structure, with the luscious dark fruit flavors of blackberry and cassis carrying through. The wine's texture is velvety, and its tannins are finely integrated, providing both structure and a luxurious mouthfeel. Layers of complexity unfold, revealing notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and a touch of tobacco. The finish is extraordinarily long and harmonious, with the dark fruit and spice flavors lingering on the palate. It leaves a lasting impression of opulence and finesse.

While Masseto 2016 is already a wine of immense charm and complexity, it has the capacity to reward those with patience. This wine has the potential to age gracefully for at least two decades or more.

An excellent sample tasted straight from the cask. Deep purple colour with violet hue and black core. Very deep aromatic structure reminiscent of ripe plums, blackberries and juicy black cherries, sloe and hints of cherry stone. A very energetic wine with refined acidity, great freshness, depth and length, rich and concentrated fruit, mild spices and discreet toasting. A wine with great potential, also for an even higher score after bottling.
