The Story

Masseto was born ‘almost by chance’ in 1986 when it was decided to vinify the Merlot from the Masseto vineyard alone as it ‘promised well’. This small, exceptional and legendary cru has soon become a collector’s item sold in auctions all over the world. The first vintage was called very simply ‘Merlot’ but, from 1987, it has taken on the name of its vineyard ‘Masseto’.

The Masseto vineyard is a unique place. Blessed with the generosity of a...

Written Notes

The 2020 vintage on the Tuscan coast was marked by a warm growing season with well-timed rainfall and beautifully even ripening. A mild winter led into an early vegetative cycle, while summer brought stable warmth without extreme heat spikes, allowing Merlot to reach full phenolic maturity at optimal sugar levels. Late-August showers refreshed the vines before harvest, preserving vibrant acidity and aromatic lift. Yields were modest, but the resulting fruit was deeply concentrated, silky, and exceptionally pure—ideal conditions for Masseto’s blue-clay terroir to shine.

The Masseto 2020 is a magnificent, sculpted expression of coastal Merlot—rich, velvety, and profoundly refined, balancing the warmth of the vintage with the unmistakable tension and minerality of the Masseto hill.

The nose opens with a stunning interplay of black cherry, ripe plum, and blueberry compote, lifted by notes of violet, dried rose, and coastal herbs. Beneath the fruit lies a luxurious, savory complexity: cocoa powder, pencil lead, warm earth, and fine sandalwood, evolving with air toward hints of truffle, licorice, and sweet tobacco.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, delivering depth without heaviness. The tannins are silky, long-grained, and impeccably integrated, framing a concentrated core of cassis, dark cherry, and blackberry. The signature Masseto minerality—saline, graphite-tinged, almost volcanic in its precision—runs through the mid-palate, providing tension and definition. A lively thread of acidity brings clarity and lift, driving the wine toward a long, resonant, velvet-lined finish, layered with notes of dark chocolate, spice, and crushed stone.

A brilliant Masseto—opulent, complex, and elegantly sculpted, showcasing the finesse of the 2020 vintage and the singular character of the site. Already captivating, but its greatest nuances will reveal themselves over the next 20–30+ years.

An excellent sample tasted straight from the cask. Deep purple colour with violet hue and black core. Very deep aromatic structure reminiscent of ripe plums, blackberries and juicy black cherries, sloe and hints of cherry stone. A very energetic wine with refined acidity, great freshness, depth and length, rich and concentrated fruit, mild spices and discreet toasting. A wine with great potential, also for an even higher score after bottling.
