MIchael Boradbent gives this 5 Stars (out of 5 possible), writing: "reputed from the start to be head and shoulders the best '45. A big strapping wine ... with magnificent depth and concentration. ...Then a memorable bottle at the 50th anniversary '1945 Vintage Dinner' hosted by Sir Christopher Mallaby at teh Embassy in Paris in December 1995. I noted 'powerful, assertive, years of life, impressive but not a joy.. Most recently noting good col...

The Story

Taylor’s Port is the last of the original English founding port companies to remain family owned. It has never been bought, sold or taken over. The company is run by descendants of the founders. This ensures its outlook and philosophy remains focused on the production of top quality ports.
Taylor’s were also the first to invest heavily in property in the Upper Douro. The recent acquisition of Quinta do Junco illustrates the continued commitme...

Due to bottle shortage after WWII the whole Vintage 1945 was bottled by Taylors in Vila Nova de Gaia. This was to become a rule as late as 1974. Full transparent dark red colour. Incredibly young and powerful in the Nose with malt, coffee, toffee and floral-fresh notes. White pepper and a perfectly integrated acidity on the palate with chocolate, malt, coffee and a hint of mixed herbs. Multi-layered, very long aftertaste. Tasted with many other 1945s in Porto. 20/20

The 1945 Vintage Port from Taylor's has perhaps always been overshadowed by the legendary 1948, but it deserves respect. This particular vintage was bottled in Portugal because of postwar restrictions that prevented bottling in England. It has a gorgeous cassis, clove and menthol nose that explodes from the glass, developing scents of Christmas cake and pain d'épices with time. The palate displays perfect acidity, unerring transparency and maybe more refinement than the 1924 Taylor's tasted in the same week. Astonishing length, from an astonishing Port. Tasted at Koala's 1945 dinner.

From an unlabelled bottle brought a few years ago by a dinner guest with a handwritten hanging neck label that says 'Taylor, 1970?'. Imagine our surprise when we pulled the cork!
Pale to mid tawny with a rose red core. Very heady and floral (violets?), then brûlée. Very lifted rather than heavy. The last time I tasted this was at the British embassy in Paris in 1995 at a special dinner to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the armistice. Alastair Robertson was on my left. Unctuous in the extreme. This is the stage one hopes for when tasting young vintage port - so mellow yet so well balanced. No suggestion of over-insistent spirit. Creamy texture and a suggestion of russet apples. Spicy finish with lots of power in it. So long. You really wouldn't need anything with this though I am looking forward to the mature brebis cheese we'll nibble at with this at the end of dinner tonight.
