The Story

Taylor’s Port is the last of the original English founding port companies to remain family owned. It has never been bought, sold or taken over. The company is run by descendants of the founders. This ensures its outlook and philosophy remains focused on the production of top quality ports.
Taylor’s were also the first to invest heavily in property in the Upper Douro. The recent acquisition of Quinta do Junco illustrates the continued commitme...

Wine Information

1977 Vintage: The winter of 1976/7 was one of the wettest on record, with over 60 centimetres of rain falling between October and March, and after three years of drought this rain was very welcome. The harvest started on 28th September in extremely hot conditions; yields in the valley were generally on the high side.

For Taylor’s not only was the 1977 an incredible vintage, it was also a landmark year for Quinta de Vargellas as electricity ...

Written Notes

Has always been a superb bottle for me, though this one seemed as though it was peaking today (which is not to say that it won’t easily last another two decades in a good cellar). Fragrant with coffee bean, aniseed, spices, and florals. Hints of glacé orange. Lovely now. 95.

This vintage really took its time to form since the wet winter, cold spring and cool summer did not encourage the vines to work well. But by the beginning of September there were signs of improvement. The high temperature during the rest of the month made this autumn the hottest since 1963. Fine-looking bottle. Decanted five hours. Dark, purple colour with very pronounced and intense nose of fruitcake tones, anise, plum, liquorice, dark fruits, blackberries, and coffee. Full-bodied, moderate acidity and big tannins are dominating this relatively young port. On the palate very ripe, jammy dark fruitiness and violet flavours are accompanied with loads of spices, liquorice, smoke, and espresso flavours. A high level of alcohol is very well integrated into the wine prolonging the youthful, spectacular aftertaste. This should remain as it is until 2030.

The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is initially tight and conservative on the nose: strawberry, baked cherry, tobacco and wild hedgerow notes emerging but remaining tight-lipped. This needs a good decant! The palate is endowed with depth and concentration, very well balanced with an attractive crispness. Perhaps you could argue that it is a "linear" and more "correct" Taylor's compared to the 1970 and lacks some charm. But there is immense complexity here so it is more a case of a Port demanding a very long maturation in bottle. Tasted in the Factory House in Porto for "Taylor's - The Story of a Classic Port House" book.
