The Story

Château Batailley, Grand Cru Classé 1855, is Borie-Manoux's and the Castéja-family's flagship. The name comes from the battle ("bataille") that took place there during the 100-years war in 1453. During this battle, the French re-conquered the neighbouring Chateau Latour from the English troops, a crucial point for ending the 300 year long reign of the English in Aquitaine. In the 16th century, the first vines were planted on these historical and blood soaked grounds. Chateau Batailley's 6ha park was designed by Barillet-Deschamps, Napoleon III's park architect, in 1850. In 1855 Napoleon III created the classification for the Paris World exhibition, and Batailley was selected together with the 60 best Medoc Estates to form the Grand Cru Classé 1855 Classification.

A classic Pauillac wine with Cabernet Sauvignon predominant and 18 months oak ageing. Now 7 years after the vintage it is beginning to come round but will be even better after another 2 or 3 years.

Written Notes

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. A great 2020 with elegance, freshness and depth. Aroma reminiscent of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries and elderberries, hints of plums in the background. Complemented by multi-facetted spiciness, cloves, cardamom and vanilla, dark chocolate and hints of roasted coffee beans. On the palate rich yet elegant with velvety character, ripe tannins, mild spices and fine toasting, subtle oak backed by juicy fruit, quoting the nose. A great Batailley with fine tension and excellent length.

Tasted in May 2021. This one was a bit old school Pauillac with a tannic approach, oaky, well-structured, strong backbone. The fruit here is not allowed here to move freely around yet. Maybe in 5-10 years from now.

Ruby. Blackberries, cassis, dark fruits, some vanilla notes nose, quite intense. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, anise, spices, juicy with structure, long finish. 92-94
