The Story

An official act from the beginning of the 16th century lists already this parcel of 52 worked in the old Domain of the Dukes of Burgundy. The craft, the traditional unit of surface in Burgundy, represents the surface of which a vine grower could take care of himself in one day; there are about 24 worked in one hectare. True closed, girdled with dying, it covers an area of 2.15 hectares, identical to the 52 worked in the 16th century. The soil is strongly calcareous, stony, poor, rather deep and very clayey (white marl). The perfect south-east exposure guarantees ideal sunshine. The very steep slope of the vineyard allows a very good drainage.

This wine, firm and elegant at the same time, plays in a league of its own. Its structure is complex and harmonious. Its aromas, very ample, give it an exceptional volume and a rare distinction. Wine of guard, it evolves slowly in bottle to reach a fullness from 10 years of age.

Vintage 2008

An indifferent spring caused uneven flowering and mildew risk. At the end of June the weather changed for the better, continuing into July. Apart from local hail in the Côte de Beaune at the end of July, the summer began well. August arrived fairly cold and variable, but fortunately the last week of the month brought fine, warm weather. The lead-up to harvest saw sunny skies, apart from two days of rain in mid-September. A challenging vintage.

From day one the red wines have had a rich, pure fruit character with fine, silky tannins. The whites offer a good balance between ripe fruit and vibrant acidity. A vintage not to be overlooked because the wines deliver potential and pleasure.

Written Notes

Bright ruby. Red berries, some darker notes, almost reductive nose, with massive swirling of the glass, scented notes. Tight. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, red berries and darker fruits, again tight and firm. Not a crowd pleaser. 90-93
