This exquisite bottle came directly from Drappier´s cellar. While the new vintages mature in the cool darkness of the Reims cellars, hollowed out of the limestone in 1870, the large bottles and old vintages like this 1959 are prudently lined up in the 12th century cellar constructed in Urville, and are still predominantly turned by hand in the old method of remuage.
This small company has a long history. The Drappier family has its roots in the 17th century, when Rémy Drappier was born and became, like Nicolas Ruinart, a merchant draper in Reims, but one must wait until 1808 before one of the ancestors of the Drappier house, Louis, settled in Urville and began to develop the vineyards. Drappier was president de Gaulle's favourite champagne, which was no wonder, since Drappier has always been a very quality-minded house.
Today, André and his son Michel preside over the destiny of the house, and three Drappiers of the next generation allow them to hope that there will be more history to come.
This 1959 Carte d´Or Brut 1959 champagne is from vineyards situated in Urville, and it has been made from 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Gamay selection massale de Champagne.
Only the first press has been used to produce this lovely cuvee. After a natural decantation by gravity, 50% of the blend is fermented in Demi-muds (large oak barrels). Egg Blancs have been used for the fining during the cold temperatures of winter (5°C to 8°C). This bottle was disgorged in 2003 and it had a very youthful appearance. Decanted for 30 minutes. Deep, gold and seductive color. Clean, fresh, tiny bubbles. Charming fruit, lively, crispy and complex. This wine is extremely rich, creamy and very long. It also has the typical power of the vintage. It has always given me the most enjoyable performance – a surprisingly good, big-hearted champagne!
