A masterclass in single-plot (lieu-dit) terroir expression from Merfy in the Montagne de Reims, Chemin de Reims is crafted from 100% Chardonnay planted in 1989 on south-facing, iron-rich sandy soils over deep chalk. Vinified in neutral oak barrels with indigenous yeasts and bottled with a low Extra Brut dosage, Alexandre Chartogne captures a uniquely rich yet laser-focused expression of northern Chardonnay.
The nose is expressive, distinct, and mineral-driven, opening with Meyer lemon, crisp yellow apple, and white peach, seamlessly layered over autolytic notes of fresh warm brioche, raw hazelnut, subtle vanilla bean, and a striking iron-chalk soil footprint. On the palate, the wine enters with a bright, crystalline texture and a fine, creamy mousse. A concentrated, vinous core of citrus oil and stone fruit expands across the mid-palate, lifted by a energetic, mouthwatering vein of acidity that cuts through the plot's natural sun-drenched richness. It finishes long, bone-dry, and deeply salivary, leaving a lasting trail of lime zest, subtle toast, and a fine mineral-saline grip.
