The Story

This Champagne comes from a rare, ungrafted vineyard of Pinot Meunier. Phylloxera has never touched this sandy parcel, and we passionately continue to preserve these vines. The limestone content is lower in this vineyard than in the surrounding ones, with only the primary root of the vine descending deep into the calcareous bedrock. This wine provokes strong emotions. Vintage 2019

The 2019 growing period posed many challenges following budbreak in early April, which brought severe spring frosts that took their toll on the vineyards. Early summer was variable, with powdery mildew becoming a serious threat. The summer season saw two heatwaves in June and July, with a record-breaking temperature of 42.9°C measured on July 25th. Written Notes

Sourced from a legendary single plot (lieu-dit) in Merfy, Les Barres is crafted from ungrafted, pre-phylloxera Pinot Meunier vines planted in 1952 in deep sandy soils over chalk. Vinified in neutral oak with native yeasts and bottled Extra Brut, Alexandre Chartogne's 2019 release represents one of the most profound, terroir-driven expressions of Pinot Meunier in all of Champagne.

The nose is captivating, distinct, and hauntingly aromatic, uncoiling with wild alpine strawberries, bruised yellow apple, and white peach, intertwined with autolytic layers of warm brioche, raw hazelnut, dried orange peel, and an unmistakable sandy-chalk minerality. On the palate, the wine possesses extraordinary purity and physical presence. A fine, velvety mousse carries a dense, vinous core of orchard fruit and savory spice across the mid-palate, held in dynamic focus by the electric natural acidity of the 2019 vintage. It closes on a long, bone-dry, and salivary finish, leaving a lingering impression of redcurrant skin, subtle toast, and a fine saline-mineral grip.
