Adriana Karembeu and Michel Drucker will chair the 154th charity auction at the Hospices de Beaune which will take place on 16th November. Every year the event is organised by the famous auction house Christie's dedicated to the Hospices de Beaune. The "Cuvée des Présidents" (lot of 228 litres) of Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru will be sold at the auction with the profits going to two associations: "Toutes à l'Ecole" which finances education for young girls in Cambodia and "Fondation Imagine", a research organisation specialising in genetic disorders. Two ambassadors will attend the auction: judoka Teddy Riner and journalist Tina Kieffer.

Historia

Before the French Revolution, trade was organised by cooperatives and wine was sold by the intermediary of barrel makers and sworn wine brokers. These cooperatives had their headquarters in Beaune or Dijon and abided by very strict rules. The transportation of wine in barrels was carried out in very difficult conditions. It was only in Louis 14th's reign that Burgundy wines were to experience greater fame, from the moment when those high up in the King's court and foreign ambassadors in Paris started to take an interest. It was in this climate that Pierre Faiveley founded the business in 1825.

In the beginning of the 19th century, the transportation of Burgundy wines towards countries in Northern Europe began to develop, principally along rivers or canals. Thus, the Burgundy wine merchants started to visit these countries where they would exchange wine for textiles in particular. Joseph Faiveley was one of these travellers, exited by the discovery of new countries, but very Burgundian too. The Domain's reputation started to grow...

François Faiveley was not destined to be a winemaker. He was a brilliant student, who became a doctor at a very young age, before establishing himself in Nuits-Saint-Georges. We are at the end of the 19th century and the worst crisis that Burgundy has ever known appeared - the phylloxera. Seeing the domain disappearing, devastated by insects, he spent his whole life trying to save his vines. His devotion to the cause finished him off. He died young at the age of 59.

Georges Faiveley, a captain in the Great War, and a Verdun war hero, was without a doubt the artisan of the domain and the most hard-working promoter of Burgundy wines. When the great depression of 1929 crossed the Atlantic, the whole of Burgundy was in despair; the cellars were full, but the wines found no buyers. The oak barrels cost more than the wine in them.

François Faiveley took over the domain at the age of 25. He was able to give it a new boost – using a precursor of the sorting table and carrying out cold macerations for example. At the same age as his father, Erwan Faiveley took over the domain in 2007, becoming the seventh generation. On his arrival, he renewed and reinforced his team and invested in the winery and the vineyards. He brought new dynamics to the family business, while remaining faithful to his predecessors' values.

Viiniviljelykset

Domaine Faiveley is located in France, at the heart of Viticultural Burgundy, between Dijon and Beaune in Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Historically based in the Côte de Nuits capital, the Faiveley family has progressively extended its domaine and today owns vineyards in the finest climats in Burgundy - Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Volnay, Puligny-Montrachet, Mercurey and others. The vineyards are very fragmented. The average surface area per appellation is around just 1 hectare. The number of bottles produced for each wine is therefore very limited.

Faiveley exploits more than 10 hectares of Grand Crus and nearly 25 hectares of Premier Crus, including several climats that are exclusively owned by the family – these are the monopoles - Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos des Issarts, Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l'Ecu,… and the Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru.

Viinivalmistus

Harvests usually happen in September. When the grapes are ideally ripe, the grape-pickers teams harvest all the domain's plots for ten days. The grapes are quickly carried to the winery hall in small boxes. The bunches are laid down afterwards on a conveyor belt and are selected bunch after bunch in order to keep only the best.

Faiveley is well-known for a long time as a worth keeping wines producer. The fermentation length is an essential element to produce such wines. The fermenting times are long and progress in low temperature wooden or stainless steel sawn-off cone tanks. The usual punching of the cap in vats allows the extraction of colour, tannins and all aromatic combinations contained in grapes skin. We use afterwards a vertical press selected for its precision and its delicacy in pressing: very pure with great quality juices have been obtained thus.

Wines mature afterwards in oak barrels in 19th century vault cellars that offer ideal conditions for long ageings. These barrels coming from great coopers have been rigorously selected for their fine grain and light toast. The magic of time does its work…
