Antonio Galloni / Vinous Media rated Kracher wines

Antonio Galloni from Vinous Media rated Kracher wines in the Vinous Lockdown Special from October 2020 ...

"I was blown away by these new releases from Gerhard Kracher. The 2015 vintage presented Kracher with the conditions to make no fewer than 12 TBAs, and he knocked it out of the park with those wines. As always, the TBAs are numbered in order of concentration, depending on the number of wines made in each vintage. For example, in 2015 there are 12, but in 2016 only three. The numbers have no relationship to each other across vintages. For the TBAs, the Nouvelle Vague wines are aged in French oak, while the Zwischen den Seen wines are done in steel. Beyond the TBAs, there is plenty more to explore here." said Antonio Galloni.

The following wines were rated:

98/100 • 2013 TBA No. 8 Scheurebe Zwischen den Seen
98/100 • 2015 TBA No. 4 Scheurebe Zwischen den Seen
97/100 • 2015 TBA No. 9 Welschriesling Zwischen den Seen

Historia

Alois Kracher was known around the world simply as Luis. He was one of the great visionaries of wine-growing. Not only did he spearhead the “Austrian wine miracle” in the 1990s, but he was also the engine for the worldwide sweet wine renaissance. The entire wine world mourned when Luis, long before his time, passed away in 2007. Educated as a chemist, he was nearly 30 years old by the time he joined his father´s winery after years of working in the pharmaceutical sector. But it wasn't long before he created a new dessert wine style demonstrating that fruit, finesse and balance are more important than sweetness alone. He also insisted on vinifying single vineyards individually and without any alterations to their true character. All this, despite the fact that friends were warning him that it would be impossible to bring 12 - and even up to 15 - different TBAs from a single vintage to the market.

Alois Kracher created an international sensation for the first time with his 1991 vintage wines, and soon after, his name became – especially in America - a synonym for cult sweet wines. Year after year, the international wine media celebrated his Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen. But this was not enough for Luis. With an indefatigable quest for innovation, he always found new products that would feature his noble sweet wines as a key ingredient - from blue cheese, grape jelly and chocolate to pomace brandy and vinegar.

They are not a typical family. This small, tightly woven and dedicated team is strongly rooted in Illmitz, at Austria´s Neusiedlersee - Lake Neusiedl -yet also is widely connected internationally. Gerhard Kracher is the young, highly energetic head of the wine estate, which he took over at full speed following the premature death of his father, Alois Kracher Jr. Michaela Kracher, Gerhard's mother, keeps a close eye on the entire operation, even on the most hectic of days.

The wines from the Weinlaubenhof have long been in a class of their own. Practically no other sweet wines have reached such a high level of recognition worldwide and only a few have come close to the high ratings Kracher wines continuously receive. Around the world, Kracher has become the synonym for noble sweet wines of ultimate perfection.

The series of Trockenbeerenauslesen wines are at the top of the pyramid – in the king´s class, so to speak - where botrytis and fruit are united together in perfect harmony. Kracher produces also Auslesen, Beerenauslesen and, if the vintage allows it, ice wines, as well as Spätlesen with clear, clean primary fruit.

And then there are the dry wines – firm, harmonious, full and round. Burgenland at its best. "With our climate, there is no such thing as light, zippy wines," says Gerhard Kracher, emphasizing the style of the wines.

Alois Kracher, who died in December 2007, will always be remembered as one of the most important ambassadors for Austrian Wine all over the world.

Today, Gerhard manages the winery with the help of his life-in partner Yvonne.

The range offered by what is undoubtedly the most widely known Austrian wine estate features the world-famous Trockenbeerenauslesen as well as Beerenauslesen, Auslesen, Eiswein (ice wine) and small amounts of dry white and red wines.

Viiniviljelykset

Alois Kracher’s vineyards stretch between Illmitz and the shore of Lake Neusiedl. To the untrained eye the area will appear completely plane, but Alois Kracher points at the "mountains": undulations of a height of up to one to one and a half meters, which have considerable influence on the development of the grapes and, above all, the quality of botrytis.
Alois's father, Alois Kracher sen., is in charge of vineyard management. The vineyards are planted at high densities in order to "stress" the vines, thus producing lower quantities at elevated concentrations. Traditional grape varieties include Welschriesling, Chardonnay, Traminer, Weißburgunder and Sämling 88 (Scheurebe).
