The Story

Trockenbeerenauslese (“dried berries selection”) comes from grapes affected by noble rot, a condition that allows the grapes to dry out completely, shriveling like raisins. When pressed, the juice from these grapes is sweet and concentrated, creating rich, complex wines. The Trockenbeerenauslese Grande Cuvée has a bouquet of juicy stone fruit and tangerines. Orange and citrus characterize the palate, with a delicate herbal spice and mineral, salty finish.

Written Notes

Vinified in stainless steel for a period of 18 months, the 2017 Welschriesling Trockenbeerenauslese No 5 Zwischen den Seen opens with a remarkably spicy, fresh and juicy apricot, pear and mango or passion fruit aroma with peppery and some minty notes. Piquant and tight on the palate, the sweetness is countered well by minerals, grippy yet fine tannins and well-integrated mineral acidity and salinity. This is a very sweet Welschriesling that should be cellared for at least another 5-10 years. Bottled with 7% alcohol and 239.9 grams per liter of residual sugar. The total acidity is at 8.1 grams per liter, so relatively high compared to most of the other TBAs here. This 2017 should improve and gain finesse with bottle age. For the moment, the sweetness and concentration make it more of a fluid dessert than a wine. Tasted in March 2020.
