The Story

On the first of November 2003,  Domaine J-F Mugnier increased from 4 to 14 hectares.  The Clos de la Maréchale, under the sole ownership of the Mugnier family since 1902, reverted to the Domaine when the farming contract ended after 53 years.

History
The origin of the name of this Clos is unknown. In 1855 the vineyard was known as ‘Clos des Fourches', then ‘Clos Maréchal' in 1892, before changing to ‘Clos de la Maréchale' in the 20th century.  Research by the historian Jean-François Bazin shows no evidence of a Marshal, or the widow of a Marshal,  during the Second Empire being connected to this village.  Further research is necessary.  Therefore, to follow...

The vineyard
The Clos de la Maréchale has a surface of 9 hectares, 76 ares.  It is the largest monopole (an appellation belonging to a single owner) in the Côte d'Or.  The average age of the vines in 2009 is about 45 years old.

The soil
The geological stratum on which the Clos de la Maréchale is situated plunges wellbelow the surface of the soil further south, marking the end of the Côte de Nuits, only to reappear in Le Montrachet between Puligny and Chassagne. Therefore one is not surprised to find the same qualities of power and longevity in these wines.

The Wine
They are wines that always need 5 to 10 years of ageing before expressing their typically floral character : "The bouquet of the 1er crus of Premeaux is remarkable and persistent : one finds the aroma of iris mingled with raspberries. Even more so, that of white lilac".

Vuosikerta 2005

2005 VINTAGE in Burgundy / Hopes made way for certainty.

2005 promises to produce outstanding whites, with elegance and opulence beyond the norm, and superb, seductive and well-structured red wines.

The richness of these wines perfectly expresses the diversity of the region. A wine of excellent quality is achieved above all through the ripeness and healthiness of the grapes. For this reason, thanks to the almost ideal climatic conditions, 2005 will an exceptional year. At the point of harvest, the chardonnay and pinot noir grapes (the two principal grape varieties in Burgundy) were magnificent and luscious. The chardonnay produced resplendent golden grapes, bursting with sugar and the pinot noir produced densely packed grapes of an intense colour, characteristic of all great vintages. Due to low rainfall and weak northerly winds, the grapes remained in a remarkable state and did not require any sorting.

Under a radiant sun, the harvest passed by peacefully, giving the wine-growers the opportunity to assess the optimal maturity in relation to the grape varieties and parcels. The sugar content in the grapes reached above satisfactory levels, in some cases close to outstanding, which is a good indication of maturity, and promises a good balance between the acidity and sugar levels found in the wines

The red grapes' thick skin stored up large quantities of polyphenol (colour and tannin), a demonstration of their healthiness. Vinification took place in ideal circumstances.

Mid-november

The white wines, although still fermenting, already reveal an extraordinary richness and aromatic complexity with great finesse (notes of pear and peach with a hint of ripe grapefruits). On the palate, the wines are incredibly ample. The chewiness and acidity are in perfect harmony and enhance the elegance and freshness of the chardonnay.

The red wines possess deep and intense garnet-coloured robes. They exude intense aromas of fruit (blueberry, blackcurrants, cherries, wild strawberries) and variety of spices (pepper). On the palate, the fruit blends with the rounded elegance of the tannins and the light acidity, which all come together to ensure the length of the wine. The powerful and elegant structure of these wines is a sign of their good ageing potential. For the domaines, cooperatives and maisons of Burgundy, 2005 is without a doubt a vintage of exceptional quality which promises wonderful surprises for the consumer.

Medium intense ruby colour. Intense and bit closed nose shows smokiness, hints of licorice root, ripe wild strawberries, blueberries and violets. Medium-bodied, intense, vivid and subtle palate with very refined tannins. Great balance and harmony. Long and lingering finish. This wine will age beautifully next 5-10 years but delivers pleasure already now. Decant for 2 hours. – JL 93p (March 2024)

2005 Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Clos de la Marechale Open and intense nose with very ripe but cool dark berry fruit, spices, led pencil and earthy notes. Completely undeveloped but has lots of layers and has, of course, much more to give. Full bodied and fruity attack with very ripe, cool dark fruit, balsamic notes, game meat and earthy notes that seamlessly continues through the very smooth mid-palate into a long finish which ads a refreshing acidity and a nice counterpoint to the ripe fruit. Lovely texture and length but need a few years to develop and grow a personality. Drink 2017-2028 92p

Bright ruby. Spoiled nose by detergents, smelling only of soap first. New wine was poured and layers of fruit, scented tones, floral and touch of leather. Fresh acidity, elegant palate, ripe feel, ripe tannins, lovely balance, rounded texture, long.
