The Story

Clos Lanson - A Secret Garden

Located in the heart of Reims, le Clos Lanson is the only hectare of vineyard to remain within the historical walls of the city. Hidden behind high walls, this single vineyard of chardonnay dating back to the 18th century offers a breathtaking view of the Cathedral. Located just above the House cellars, le Clos Lanson is farmed like a true garden both because of its unique location and the special care it receives on a daily basis. In addition this single vineyard benefits from a very pure, chalky soil and an exceptionalmicroclimate which is favorable for the development of the vine. Each year only a very limited number of vintage bottles are produced.

The vines of Clos Lanson have always been a favourite of the House’s owners and are visited daily by the Wine-Maker. In order to carry on the Lanson family spirit, every year the men and women of the house help harvest this precious plot, selecting only flawless, quality grape bunches for the production of Clos Lanson Champagne.

The wine is vinified in oak barrels from the Argonne forest during few months only in order to develop aromas of great delicacy.

Wine Information

Clos Lanson is an ideal Champagne to celebrate all of life's great moments. An exceptional aperitif, its complexity will delight the connoisseur's palate

After a long maturation, the Clos Lanson 2006 has all the attributes of a very fine Chardonnay that has benefited from a controlled fermentation in wooden barrels and optimum development in the House's Cellars.

In the flute, the wine is a pale golden colour with a fine stream of bubbles.  It has a wide range of delicately woody aromas where ripe fruit intertwines with notes of butter, vanilla, patisserie and hazelnut, punctuated with a soupçon of smoke.

The palate is rich, with concentrated fruit flavours combined with toasted, biscuity notes. The finish remains fresh, with an impressive length of flavour reflecting the noble origins of the grapes.

Vintage 2007

An unusually warm spring led to early flowering and initial optimism, which soon gave way to disappointment following one of the murkiest summers on record. Overall, 2007 was a difficult vintage saved by last-minute sunshine in late-August. Mildew and rot were the main culprits of the harvest, and the level of gluconic acid rocketed. The harvest began early, on August 24th, and was abundant in volume averaging 14,242 kg/ha. Pinot Meunier posed the biggest problems and Chardonnay clearly outperformed the rest. Many of the iconic prestige cuvée blanc de blancs were successfully produced, such as Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, Ruinart Dom Ruinart, Billecart-Salmon Cuvée Louis and Salon Le Mesnil. Some blended prestige cuvées such as Louis Roederer Cristal and Philipponnat Clos des Goisses were also made. Champagnes from 2007 are typically high in acidity and restrainedly classic in style, but lack the spine and strength of the greatest harvest years. Even if the vintage only receives three stars, its best Chardonnays are well worth seeking and storing.

Written Notes

Shiny golden colour. There is pleasant charred, bonfire expression on the coffee and cream nose with honey and butter tones in the back. The oak isnoticeable but plesant. Velvety opulent palate with caressing smoothness and vinosity to it. A mouthful with an open, welcoming character to it. Will not be one of the longest lived of Clos Lanson but one to enjoy now.
