One of the oldest champagne house, Lanson was founded in 1760 by Francois Delamotte, a magistrate from the Reims. The values and expertise that created the unique and enduring style of Champagne Lanson have been handed down from generation to generation. Since 1760, this has been the guiding philosophy of the successive generations that have promoted Lanson throughout the world.
Centuries in the dedicated pursuit of perfection have established the House of Lanson as one of the premier champagne makers. Today, the marriage of a contemporary dynamism with age-old tradition brings pleasure to millions the world over.
Champagne Lanson is one of the few houses in the Champagne region that chooses not to use malolactic fermentation. This decision guarantees the freshness and optimal development of the wines' flavours, allowing vintages to mature fully and evolve their complete array of aromas.
1904, 1928, 1955, 1971, 1990, 1995 or 1996, are among the most illustrious vintages that have distinguished Lanson as a great Champagne House reputed particularly for its Vintage champagnes.
Wine Information
1997 got under way with icy temperatures (-20°C in Reims, -24°C in Riceys on 1st and 2nd January). However, the winter that followed was very mild, which meant that everything came in to bud much sooner. Spring frosts destroyed more than 10%of the crop, and heavy rains in the month of June brought the fear of mildew. Finally, a hot dry summer brought a smile back onto the faces of the wine growers.
The good summer conditions continued throughout the harvest, which began on 15th September. The grapes were very healthy, with high sugar concentration, perfect for high quality wines.
Vuosikerta 1997
A cold winter was followed by significant spring frosts. The early summer was warm, but cool weather and rain persisted throughout the flowering period. Summer ended with warm temperatures, lending some hot-year characteristics to the year's wines even if acidity remained high at 8.5 g/l. Rot played a role in some vineyards. A small harvest (9,402 kg/ha) was picked from September 12th onwards. The 1997 vintage was rather overlooked, following the successful 1995 and 1996 vintages, and many did not produce a vintage even though the year was not particularly weak. Despite the warmth of the year the best wines have sufficient acidic backbone, but many lack intensity and harmony. Most Champagnes are quite developed already, showing no sign of further potential. Its highlights included Laurent-Perrier Alexandra Rosé, Philipponnat Clos des Goisses, Louis Roederer Cristal and Salon Le Mesnil.
