Vintage 1990

Three excellent vintages in Champagne were 1988, 1989 and 1990. Initially, many considered 1990 the finest of the trio, but that mantle has since passed to 1988. Some of the 1990 champagnes have evolved more quickly than anticipated, and there can be variation among bottles and producers. Winter and early spring saw warm weather that resulted in an early bud-break, making vines susceptible to the spring frost which duly arrived in April. This led to some uneven ripening and differing levels of maturity owing to the second generation of grapes that appeared after the frost damage and thus ripened later. The summer was generally dry and warm, which produced big, powerful, concentrated and full-flavoured wines.

Written Notes

Veuve Clicquot Cave Privée Rosé 1990 / A luminous pink, coppery colour. An explosion of enticing aromas of morello cherries and gingerbread is followed by hints of peat and liquorice. Smooth on the palate, this champagne’s soft bubbles are accented by an ample, vinous character and an extremely lengthy finish.

This vintage comprises pinot noir (47%), meunier (9%) and chardonnay (27%) from 17 grands and premiers crus, with the addition of 17% still red wine from Bouzy. Record sunshine in the months before harvest allowed sugar levels to soar. This, combined with normal levels of rainfall earlier in the year, created a champagne that surpassed the cellar master’s expectations.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is salmon, amber and medium. On the nose it is ripe, complex and closed. The taste is firm, and dry, and average in acidity, medium-bodied, with well-structured structure and mature. On the palate it is layered and has caramel, bread, citrus, mineral, apricot and cranberry flavours. The finish is long. This wine is wine for food. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years.
