The Story

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame is name in honour of the famed and undoubted Champagne pioneer, widow Clicquot. Widowed at the tender age of 28, Madame Clicquot continued her late husband's work and is the sole reason why her Champagne house is held in the high esteem that it is today. The 1998 La Grande Dame is a wine of pure beauty and power.

A majority blend of Pinot Noir, the vintage conditions are clearly visible in the glass with flavo...

Vintage 1990

Three excellent vintages in Champagne were 1988, 1989 and 1990. Initially, many considered 1990 the finest of the trio, but that mantle has since passed to 1988. Some of the 1990 champagnes have evolved more quickly than anticipated, and there can be variation among bottles and producers. Winter and early spring saw warm weather that resulted in an early bud-break, making vines susceptible to the spring frost which duly arrived in April. Written Notes

1990 La Grande Dame – Finally, something truly special. When Mariotti headed to Brisbane to present the new release, he kindly slipped a few very special magnums into his luggage for friends. Magnums of the recently disgorged 1990 La Grande Dame, direct from the cellars at Veuve Clicquot. If this gives a glimpse of what is in store for those with the 2012 in their cellar, then I am seriously underestimating that wine. This was simply one of the greatest champagnes one could ever wish to drink. Gold in color, it was wonderfully aromatic with honeysuckle, peaches, quince, beeswax, white chocolate, liquid honey, and lemongrass. Incredibly complex, it was bright, alive, finely balanced, and with great length. Layered, elegant, and with two decades at least ahead of it, this was a monumental champagne. Even better, this can be ordered from the house for around AUD$1,500 per magnum. Expect these bottles to be severely limited in quantity. 100.

  • 100p
Golden yellow colour. Fine fruit character, ripe and complex, with aroma reminiscent of juicy pear, sweet apple, hints of citrus fruit and lemon zest. On the palate elegant character with rich approach, elegant acidity, restrained fruit and convincing length. A hints of bitterness in finish creates a tension in the wine which makes it extremely appetising. A wine which combines maturity and freshnesss in a very good way.
  • 92p
Pale lemon yellow, Tiny bubbels. Fresh nose, apples, yeast, some nuts, again fresher than last bottle. Elegant texture, Fresh acidity, elegant mousse. Long lemony finish.
