The Story

The Wagners produced their first Cabernet Sauvignon – “Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon” -- from the 1972 vintage.  Their first Special Selection, from outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon lots given extended barrel aging, was made from the 1975 vintage.

Written Notes

It had the .same perfume of .78,. Bob noted right away. The 1976 seemed both more mountainous and ripe to me at first, and there were distinct charcoal, chocolate, cassis and nut-crusted bread aromas. There were some light traces of olives on the palate, which was very dry despite a flash of blackcurrant fruit. The palate was still rich, fleshy and gritty, and Adrian noted .a touch of mint

The bottle was damaged from the outside, but happily the inside was almost pure gold. Decanted for 45 minutes. Wonderfully deep and complex, as rich in colour and aroma as it is on the palate. Classic Caymus flavours on the nose - herb and black cherry, ripe plum, aniseed, and earth notes. Full-bodied, with tobacco, vanilla and liquorice aromas and a velvety mouth-feel of concentrated tannins and superb fruit. Impressive depth and layers of complexity. The tannins turn silky on the long, persistent aftertaste. Caymus 1976 is an impressive example of amazingly mouth-watering thirty-year-old Napa Valley Cabernet. This wonderful wine will last for another decade.
