The Story

The Wagners produced their first Cabernet Sauvignon – “Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon” -- from the 1972 vintage.  Their first Special Selection, from outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon lots given extended barrel aging, was made from the 1975 vintage.

The Wagners’ 60 acres of estate vineyard remain at the core of Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon, but Chuck Wagner believes that much is gained in complexity and layering of flavors by not restricting frui...

Wine Information

Caymus has a signature style that is dark in color, with rich fruit and ripe tannins – as approachable in youth as in maturity. Since its founding in 1972, Caymus has become renowned as a consistent leader in the production of Napa Valley Cabernet. Grapes for this wine are farmed in a range of Napa’s sub-appellations – from Coombsville to Calistoga – with fruit from the valley floor creating lushness and the hillsides providing backbone. Written Notes

A rich, showy style, with a very creamy texture to its mix of warmed vanilla, plum and boysenberry puree, and melted black licorice flavors. A mocha notes swirls around the fruit on the finish. Drink now through 2028. – Wine Spectator 92p

Syrupy blackcurrant fruit that pushes all the correct buttons for the variety. Super-creamy and succulent on the palate – what a pleasure! French oak spice keeps pace with the fruit. It's a Napa blockbuster of the old school. (RH)

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is purple and deep. On the nose it is intense, youthful, rich, fresh, refined and generous. The taste is rich, round, ripe, fat, with silky tannins, and average in acidity, full-bodied, with balanced structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has voluptuous, perfumed, blackberry and toasty flavours. The finish is long, flavorful, spicy and smooth. This wine is well-rounded and a mouthfilling. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years and decant at least 2h before tasting.
