The Story

Fifty-five hectares (136 acres) at the time of the 1855 classification, fifty-five hectares today: the estate is a rare example of consistency of terroir over the centuries.

The vineyard is made up of one single block adjacent to the village of Saint-Estèphe. Unique in the Médoc, it is completely surrounded by a stone wall. Inside, closest to the château, this “enclos” groups together the most famous plots of Calon.

Vintage 2009

Much like 1947, 1961 and 2005, 2009 is a year of almost overly (for Bordeaux) flamboyant and opulent wines with high maturity and low acidity. The tannins are exceptionally ripe, while the wines are quite voluptuous in style. Written Notes

With a lot of fennel and earth character this is a classic St.-Estèphe, but on the palate it has a suppleness that's modern in the best sense. Needs time to soften. Drink or hold.

  • 95p

Tasted twice - last time in September 2019. Consistent notes. Impressive wine with perfectly ripe fruit full of sweetness, strong and elegant at the same time, sophisticated on the palate with long finish. This vintage was characterized by high alcohol in Bordeaux but here it's not tasteable at all, meaning perfectly integrated with fruit!!

  • 95p

Very intense right from the start with aromas of cassis, cedar, wood smoke and beautiful freshness. There is quite a lot of structure and silky tannins on the palate and the wine winds itself energetically down to a very refreshing, elegant finish.

  • 96p
Ruby. Scented, nuanced, refined, red and darker berries nose, seductive. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, refreshing, nuanced, elegant and lively, mouthwatering, gorgeous wine. 96
