The Limestone Triumph: How Sovereign Balance Sculpted a Right Bank Sensation

Château Canon 2025 is an extraordinary, ultra-pure, and majestically structured Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé that stands out as one of the most compelling triumphs of the Right Bank. The official 2025 vintage report describes a highly contrasting and potentially extreme growing season, but the estate's prized location on the historic limestone plateau all...

The Story

With 30% of Cabernet Franc, Château Canon’s planting is characteristic of Saint-Emilion. The limestone soil reveals the full character of Cabernet Franc, which is a perfect complement to Merlot. The two varieties have long been used together. Cabernet Franc brings freshness, delicacy and structure to Château Canon wines. It makes subtle wines with fine acidity. It gives them great aromatic persistence with varied and complex smoky, roasted and...

Wine Information

The 2025 Bordeaux vintage emerged from one of the most demanding growing seasons in recent memory — the earliest budbreak since 1989, June temperatures second only to 2003 since records began, and an unusually early harvest beginning in August for the whites. Conditions that should have produced heavy, overripe wines. They didn't. Decanter's Georgie Hindle, who tasted close to 200 wines ahead of the formal campaign, describes "exceptional conc...

Vintage 2025

The Bordeaux 2025 vintage is generating massive excitement across the wine world, following its official reveal at the April 2026 En Primeur tastings. Critics and merchants widely praise it as a highly successful, contemporary vintage shaped by an unusual but highly effective growing season.

The year began with a cool, rain-heavy spring, but completely pivoted into a hot, exceptionally dry summer. The ultimate saving grace arrived during Au...

Written Notes

Canon: Located on the high plateau in the hamlet of Saint-Martin, this property is neighbored by Clos St. Martin and two Beausejours. 76% Merlot + 24% Cabernet Franc. It's full-bodied, intense, and complex; it's vibrant, with bright acidity, a great mid-palate, a sophisticated touch, and a long finish. Fabulous wine. 97-98p.

  • 98p

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Elegant yet persistent nose with complex character, blackberries and black cherries, ripe plums, hints of liquorice and mild spices, fine floral hints reminiscent of blackcurrant spurs and peonies in the background. On the palate well structured with excellent tannins, fine acidity, juicy fruit and excellent length. A great wine, classic with great freshness, depth and complete.

Inside Information

Canon's vineyards occupy prime real estate on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, with the château sitting at the highest point of the appellation. The limestone bedrock provides excellent drainage whilst the clay topsoil retains enough moisture to prevent stress during dry summers. This combination gives Canon wines their distinctive mineral backbone and remarkable aging potential. The plateau's elevation and limestone composition create wines with both power and precision, setting them apart from the sandier soils found elsewhere in Saint-Émilion.
