Wine Advocate 98-100 points

The 2015 Canon is going to be a benchmark for this historic estate. A blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, it was cropped at 42 hl/ha between 14-25 September and 30 September until 2 October respectively. The alcohol level is an average 14.5% with a pH 3.78, matured for 18 months in 70% new barrels (except for one barrel of Cabernet Franc that they will bottle separately - just to see). Lucid in color, it...

The Story

With 30% of Cabernet Franc, Château Canon’s planting is characteristic of Saint-Emilion. The limestone soil reveals the full character of Cabernet Franc, which is a perfect complement to Merlot. The two varieties have long been used together. Cabernet Franc brings freshness, delicacy and structure to Château Canon wines. It makes subtle wines with fine acidity. It gives them great aromatic persistence with varied and complex smoky, roasted and...

Vintage 2015

Full report of Bordeaux 2015 by Andrew Caillard MW “Next in line in a great series of vintages; 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2015.

2015 is a wonderful Bordeaux vintage without the hype or hysteria associated with 2009 and 2010. The wines are generally expressive and generous with wonderful concentration and structure. Given another year in barrel, the wines should gain more complexity and fruit volume. Châteaux, in all sub-regions, are e...

Ruby. Scented, red berries, fruity, spices, bright, minerals, nuanced and detailed nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, bright, fruity, intense, layered, nuanced, detailed, rich yet with freshness to back it up, incredible length. There is some warmth here. (High alcohol). Drink 2025 -2065. 98

From the very beginning, the 2015 Canon has made an eloquent case for itself as one of the wines of the vintage. Multiple tastings from bottle only confirm what several early tastings hinted at: the 2015 Canon is simply extraordinary in every way. Sumptuous and exotic, with no hard edges and exceptional balance, the 2015 grabs hold of all the senses and never lets up. A rush of red fruit intermingled with floral notes, spice and smoke notes effortlessly runs up the wine's vertical structure as the 2015 thrills with every twist and turn. The 2015 Canon is a rare wine that is both hedonistic and intellectual - well, maybe it is a bit more hedonistic-leaning. It doesn't matter. Don't miss it. This 2015 is masterpiece from General Manager Nicolas Auderbert and his team at Canon.

Dark purple red with violet hue. Excellent nose with aroma reminiscent of plums and cherries, dark chocolate, gingerbread spices, elegant toasting aroma in the background. On the palate well structured with elegant character, ripe but firm tannins, restrained fruit and mild spices. A wine with elegance and complexity as well as excellent length. A very save value. 95

Tasted in September 2016. Much more focused and precise wine in this vintage than I remember coming from this property. New manager oversaw harvest 2015 and it seems hes made many wise decisions. Great sweetnes and ripeness here, silky fruit and tannin, richness, racy and stylish. Best Canon since 1982 imho.

Deep colour. Beautiful black cherry, plum herb aromas with praline notes. Lovely sIinky black cherry plum flavours, fine graphite, slinky textures, mid-palate richness and generosity. savoury oak notes and mineral length. Lovely balance , strength and texture with superb fruit density and suppleness. Superb energy and drive. Still elemental but balanced for the long term. 98 points.

Canon Saint Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classe - 72% Merlot 28% Cabernet Franc Lovely deep colour, perfumed nose, smoky, inky, layered, great mouthfeel, overtly unctuous, very nice balance, very nice all round feeling, lots of dusty tannins, on the finish, very fine with great length. This is lush, but it will live long too, fine balance. This Chateau is back on form, last year was a great success too. 95-98/100 2028-2050
