The Story

Château de Beaucastel has long been considered as one of the greatest wines in France. It is famously known for its elegance, balance and ageing potential. Beaucastel has an exceptional terroir at the northern limit of the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, exposed to the mistral wind. All thirteen varieties of the appellation have been grown organically since the sixties.

Wine Information

In 1909 Pierre Tramier bought the property and Beaucastel then passed to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, a scientist who considerably increased the vineyard holding. His efforts were continued by Jacques Perrin until 1978. Today the torch is carried by Jean Pierre and François, sons of Jacques. But Marc, Pierre, Thomas and Matthieu, who represent the fifth generation, are ready to pursue this fabulous family history.

Written Notes

The 1983 was a rather good vintage at Château Beaucastel. Normal winter and spring. Bud break occurred early April with cold and rain following in May. Flowering started on the 8th of June. Warm but rainy July and September. The harvest started on the 12th of September and proceeded under ideal climatic conditions until the 6th of October. A small crop, only 13,000 cases were released. The bottle was in top condition. Level by the neck. Decanted two hours. Dark, concentrated colour. Complex nose, just starting to open up. Lovely blackberry, spice and smoke aroma on the nose. Excellent balance and lovely intensity. Quite full and long, not as hard as expected. Approaching its peak, but there is no hurry. Elegant and charming with good length.

Magnum served blind. Slightly cloudy ruby with lots of evolution at the rim. Gamey nose. Not especially fresh but certainly massively mature. Very very sweet and very definitely ready to drink! Slightly medicinal and noticeable sediment. On the way down.

The top year all over Rhône with huge concentration. So is the case with this intense wine. Clear, medium intense cherry red colour with orange hue. Rich, warm and developed ripe nose with farmyard, sweaty animal aromas with sweet fruity notes and cooked vegetables. Full-bodied wine shows big tannins and moderate level of acidity balanced with sweet very ripe vegetal fruit flavours and long warming finish.
