The Story

Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a testament to the legacy of Jacques Perrin, a true visionary in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. A pioneer in both embracing and refusing new possibilities, he was first to replant all 13 grape varieties, he was a pioneer in his winemaking, but equally visionary in refusing to use chemicals in his vineyard, turning instead to organic and then biodynamic viticulture, decades ago.

Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a truly unique wine, a blend built around very old vines of Mourvedre, planted at the nothern edge of the property, itself at the northern edge of the appellation.

First crafted in 1989, to unanimous acclaim, this cuvée is only produced in vintages that meet the family's exacting standards. 2014, like almost every vintage of Hommage, will be for the patient ones. It is a vintage of compelling freshness, finesse, and elegance. A refined, almost delicate Hommage, rather than a flamboyant one, reminiscent of 2001 rather than 2007.

Production is extremely limited, to less than 6000 bottles. In 2014, it was even less.

Wine Information

Parker 100 points: The 1990 Jacques Perrin cuvee possesses an increased percentage of Mourvedre (60%), along with Grenache (20%), Counoise (10%), and Syrah (10%). It is a super-concentrated, mammoth-sized wine with black/purple color, and a huge, fragrant perfume of smoked meat, black fruits, earth, and Asian spices. Muscular and tannic, with tremendous amounts of glycerin and concentration, this super cuvee should reach its peak by the end of the century and last for 20-30 years.

Written Notes

In 1989, 1990, 1994 and 1995, weather conditions were so favourable that the Perrin family decided to make a special cuvée in honour of their father. The Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin from those years was made mostly from very old Mourvedre vines yielding tiny quantities of intensely ripe, concentrated fruit. Beaucastel´s winemaking philosophy is quite unique: "We try to place the vine in its universe, that is to say relate it to the earth, the animal life and the stars, by which it is influenced", sounds uncommon, but it definitely works well. Decanted two hours. The nose is a beautiful, full and evolved: very minty, chocolatey and with an appealing herbal character. There are also tobacco, tea and very deep black and purple fruits around. Tannic, rich and leathery on the palate; complex and full with a firm structure. Perfect balance. Not the most drinkable wine currently, but has a striking future yet to be.

Made only in the best years for Mourvèdre, when it gets very ripe (about 13.7%), and the Grenache, which is 15% when it is ripe. 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise. 1990 is the second vintage of Hommage.
Great depth of colour – even black. Glossy and bluer than then 1990 Bonneau Réserve des Célestins. Very seductive and integrated without being too alcoholic. Oddly, not gamey; more peppery. Treacle toffee and lots of tannin and acid. Jewelly sweet but not nearly resolved. Very very taut but very very young.
