The Story

The philosophy behind work in both the vineyard and cellars is akin to that of a goldsmith, as befits a terroir of this calibre. It calls for careful decision-making and meticulous execution.

Soil management is entirely organic and viticulture is sustainable, with green cover between the vine rows and Guyot double pruning. Picking is done entirely by hand. The grapes are sorted and put into small vats corresponding to specific plots; each v...

Vintage 2018

Report and recommendations for the 2018 Bordeaux vintage

by Andrew Caillard MW

2018 is an exceptional year. Bordeaux whites and Sauternes are very good, but from an Australian perspective, the excitement is all in the red wines. All sub-regions produced examples of very good wines, but some performed better than others. Written Notes

Ruby. Intense, blackberries, spices, nuanced, violets, bright and detailed nose, layered and deep. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, superb texture, nuanced, detailed, bright and layered, superb balance, incredible depth. A superb effort and so much brighter than many in the vintage. 98

Les Carmes Haut Brion - 37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot. 50% whole bunches used in vinification and "only" 13.75% alcohol. This wine is so ridiculously sublime! Combines perfectly power and elegance, added riveting richness, complexity, and length: grilled bacon and cigar box. Imho, the best vintage Guillaume Pouthier has ever produced at LCHB! Tasted twice from the barrel, once from the bottle. 98+p

Medium deep colour. Musky plum rhubarb raspberry aromas - over ripe. Supple and squashy with fine integrated but plentiful tannins. Good acid line but fruit loses power. Surprisingly simple wine with some decent volume and richness.

Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Wonderful nose with multi-layered fruit, strawberries, blackberries and hints of vanilla. On the palate an almost exotic, juicy character, sweet fruit, ripe tannins and very convincing length. One of the vintage's discoveries.
