Château Pichon Longueville

Château Pichon Longueville, or Pichon Baron as it is often called, is known as "the male" part of the original Pichon Longueville property that got divided in 1850, not only due to the fact that the male heir inherited this part but also because it is a more "manly" wine in character than its sister, Pichon Lalande, across the road.

Spices, black fruits, licorice, leather. Shows the class of the vintage and of the producer. Long time since these guys put a foot wrong. Has balance and travels the tightrope of intensity and elegance with ease. Will drink superbly for many years yet and may even have more surprises. Top notch. The finish is very long.

The 2000 Château Pichon Baron is just getting better and better and better. Perhaps the magnum format played its part, but nevertheless...just...wow. This is a millennial Left Bank with the keys to the top drawer. It has an incredibly precise, mineral-driven bouquet with intense black fruit infused with cedar and graphite scents. It just reeks of Pauillac in an almost uncompromising, yet compelling manner. The palate is structured, stylish and effortless, extraordinarily pure and unerringly youthful. This is a Pichon Baron saying, You ain't seen nothing yet. You could broach this now if you wanted, but the clever people will wisely bunker this for another decade and gloat from 2025 onward. Tasted January 2016.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron 2000 PT 96p 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. 55% Grand Vin, IPT 78, 13.2 % alc. 50hl/ha 80% new oak. “The year when everything was perfect” (Seeley). This is still seriously deep and brooding with great depth and intensity on both the nose and palate. It is positively brimming with soft ripe fruit despite showing signs of complexity and development on the nose. There is great concentration and balance here with beautifully suave tannic structure giving freshness to a long, very sophisticated finish. Impressive. This is difficult to fault. Delicious. Drink 2015 – 2035+.
