The Story

Our Grand Vin Château Pichon Baron, classified as a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is made with grapes from the oldest vines on the estate’s historic plots. This quintessential Pauillac offers an intense and profound sensory experience of great complexity. Château Pichon Baron exhibits elegance, intensity and exceptional length on the palate. It is a wine that improves year after year and can age for over 40 years in the cellar.

The reputation of Pichon Baron until the 1960s was superior to that of Pichon Lalande across the road, it was also placed above Pichon Lalande in the Classification of 1855. But on the death of Jean Bouteillier in 1961 its reputation began to sink. His eldest son Bertrand was still young and inexperienced and there was a lack of money for necessary investments leading to a decline in quality of the wines during the 1960s and 1970s. During the 1980s there were signs of recovery but not at the same speed as with many other properties during this time and certainly nowhere near that of Pichon-Lalande that had prospered enormously under the care of May de Lencquesaing to become one of the first "Super-seconds".

Wine Information

This vintage expresses all the terroir’s characteristics, the favourable weather conditions, meticulous work in the vineyards and selection focused on the major terroirs.

Still young and feisty, this wine expresses both reserve and distinction. Dark, almost black, in colour; the fruit bursts onto the palate, enhanced by gentle aging. The impressive structure becomes more refined after breathing, an essential stage for this wine which needs time to reveal its character.

Written Notes

The 2005 Pichon Baron has a dense ruby/purple color, sweet crème de cassis fruit, lots of cedar wood and forest floor, medium to full body, ripe tannin, and a long finish of a good 30+ seconds. This is a beauty and one of the most successful Pauillacs of this vintage. Drink it now through 2035.

Tasted at the property in April 2018 during dinner. Similar case to 2004 tasted at the same dinner. Brutally tight and dense.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron 2005.PT 96p 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. 55% Grand Vin. IPT (tannin index) 78. 13.6% alc. 80% new oak. Deep purple almost opaque colour. Youthful and tight on the nose despite being opulent, harmonious and pure. There is great concentration and power here with full muscular flavour with rich ripe tannins that hit the palate hard but still leave a long refreshing, satisfying finish. This is classic Pauillac; a wine for the long term for sure. Drink 2015-2030+.
