The Story

Grapes are hand-picked. Fermentations last about 3 weeks in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with frequent pumping-overs and addition of yeasts. Wines are afterward transferred to oak barrels, of which 25% are new, for 14-18 months aging. They are fined and filtered prior to bottling. No press wine is added into the grand vin.

When I visited Bordeaux in early March, Corona was a threat on the horizon and France was more concerned about an air traffic control strike. However, I was traveling to Bordeaux and had the chance to get a first taste of the 2019 vintage. Rauzan Gassies
 – 72% Cabernet Sauvignon + 28% Merlot, 50% new oak, 14% alcohol. Aromatic blackcurrants on the nose and palate, fresh, very elegant with finesse. Tasty with fine complexity, grained tannins, fine structure and length. This property continues its improvement, seen in 2018 vintage. 2019 is as appealing and seductive. 94p.

Dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Expressive nose with back cherries, dark berries and subtle oak, discreet spiciness in the background. On the palate well balanced with ripe tannins, firm structure, freshness, mild spices and lingering fruit flavour.
