Raphel Coche told me that the 2012 Corton Charlemagne was the only vineyard that escaped hail damage this year. It has a very succinct nose, not predisposed to go out and grab you by the lapels. The aromatics unfurl with a sense of ease prioritizing finesse over power: beeswax, linden, lemon thyme and fresh pear. The palate is exquisitely balanced with fleeting glimpses of Seville orange and apricot. But there is more about the tension, the ef...

The Story

The Hill of Corton lies in the midst of a cluster of famous wine-growing villages – Ladoix-Serrigny, Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Savigny-lès-Beaune – with, to the north, the southern end of the Côte de Nuits, where vineyards mingle with stone quarries (Comblanchien limestone). The vineyards lie at heights of 250-330 metres and form a kind of amphitheatre not found elsewhere in the Côte. The Hill of Corton produces white Corton-Charle...

Wine Information

A great vintage for one of the great wines of the world, the Coche-Dury Corton Charlemagne 2012. A 97+ point effort so impressive that Neal Martin ran out of superlatives, it is at the pinnacle of white wine and one of the most collectable on the planet.

Coche-Dury is a Burgundian icon. The tiny amounts of wine produced are typified by opulence and an open generosity that means they can be enjoyed young or cellared for years. The quality ha...

Vintage 2012

2012 was beset by unusual weather that didn’t spare the vines! A mild winter, spring-like March, cool spring with frosts, summer-like May, cooler, wetter June, a variable summer with heatwaves, hail and storms… Because of the cold damp spring, some of the vine flowers didn’t set and form fruit, there was millerandage (where the flowers aren’t fully fertilised and give small berries) and high pressure from mildew and odium. Temperatures went ri...

Written Notes

Wait!  There were a couple more Coches, the young bucks, Greek Freaks if you will.  We came back to where we started to close out the meal, and the 2012 Coche-Dury Corton Charlemagne delivered.  Yes, it was too young, but it was sweet, sugary, and decadent, a hot chick of a wine, too young but nice to taste.  Its finish really impressed me with its length; there was much more conversation to be had here than the usual hot chick lol (96).

Just six pièces from east-facing vineyards. Not yet on sale – the 2009 was sold this year.
Mushroom aromas. Crème de morels. Very youthful and tight. Raphael thinks it’s more concentrated than the rest because this vineyard wasn’t hailed. More energy. Long.

Coche Dury Corton-Charlemagne 2012 / The nose gives off a fine bouquet - typical of the appellation - of brioche, spices and white fruit fragrances on a slightly vanilla-flavoured base. On the palate, it offers intense freshness and richness that underline the perfect balance of this strong wine.
