Wine Information

Hershey Vineyard is DANA’s largest and most diverse vineyard site, planted to both red and white grapes. This 35-acre vineyard perches 1800 feet above sea level in the Howell Mountain AVA, where the soils include varying combinations of fractured bedrock, gravel, compressed ash boulders, clay, and white dust. The site’s diversity requires block-specific farming; pick dates are typically four weeks apart for red grapes. Fermented in single barr...

Written Notes

The Dana Estates Hershey Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2019 is a profound expression of high-elevation viticulture, sourced from the volcanic soils of Howell Mountain. In the glass, it presents a brilliant straw-gold with green hues. The nose is incredibly intense and "vertical," characterized by an unmistakable volcanic minerality and flint, which gives way to concentrated aromas of lemon curd, white grapefruit, and a distinct herbal lift of sage and verbena.

The palate is a masterclass in tension and textural contrast. Unlike many Napa Sauvignons, this is almost bone-dry and structurally imposing. The entry is electric with high-toned acidity, but the mid-palate is surprisingly expansive, offering flavors of ripe pear, ginger, and crushed stones. A subtle, well-integrated oak influence provides a creamy frame without masking the fruit. The finish is strikingly long and savory, defined by a lingering saline grip and a touch of lime zest bitterness. Such a perfect wine:)

Inside Information

Dana Estates is the third winery to occupy this piece of vineyard land in the heart of the famed Rutherford Bench. First farmed and developed by German viticulturalist H. W. Helms in 1883, it was purchased in 1976 by John and Diane Livingston and served as the home for Livingston Moffett winery until proprietor Hi Sang Lee bought the property in 2005. The winery was re-designed by renowned architect Howard Backen, keeping the original stone walls as its centerpiece.  Hi Sang and Howard worked carefully with winemakers Philippe Melka and Cameron Vawter to insure that the space and facilities would enable the production of consistently world class wines.
