Written Notes

The 2019 vintage in Napa Valley is widely admired for its balance, purity, and classical structure. A cool spring delayed budbreak, while a warm but even summer allowed grapes to ripen slowly, developing fine tannins, vivid aromatics, and excellent natural acidity. Early autumn brought ideal weather, enabling long hang time without heat stress. For Darius II—a selection of the estate’s most expressive barrels—the 2019 vintage offered the perfect combination of power, composure, and textural finesse, yielding one of the most elegant editions of the decade.

The Darius II 2019 is a stunningly polished and opulent Cabernet—rich, multilayered, and impeccably refined, displaying the finest attributes of both the vintage and the estate’s meticulous craftsmanship. The nose is deep and seductive, unfolding with blackberry liqueur, crème de cassis, and ripe black plum, accented by notes of violet, graphite, anise, and dark cocoa. Subtle layers of sweet tobacco, sandalwood, and warm baking spices emerge with air, adding noble complexity.

On the palate, the wine is sumptuous yet superbly balanced, delivering a velvety cascade of dark fruit framed by silky, tightly knit tannins. Flavors of cassis, boysenberry, and black cherry compote glide across the palate with effortless richness. The 2019 vintage’s signature freshness brings brightness and lift, while nuanced accents of espresso, black licorice, sage, and mineral earth deepen the mid-palate. The finish is long, resonant, and luxuriously textured, echoing dark fruit, spice, and a refined graphite edge.

A magnificent Darius II—powerful, sophisticated, and beautifully sculpted, with impressive aging potential. Enjoyable after a long decant, but destined to evolve gracefully over the next 15–25+ years, gaining nuance and aromatic detail.
