The Story

One of the Douro Valley’s finest vineyards, Bomfim is the heart of some of the company’s greatest Ports, having provided wines for Dow’s Vintage Ports ever since it was acquired in 1896. The estate is situated in the centre of the best wine-producing area known as the ‘Cima Corgo’, which offers an ideal balance between the relatively wet ‘Baixo Corgo’ to the west and the intense heat of the ‘Douro Superior’ to the east.

Vintage 2018

After an extended drought, rain finally came to the Douro in spring 2018 in such quantities that there was some damaging erosion. Following that, summer was hot, and yields were consequently low, but the classic varieties thrived in the heat, producing deep, intense, fragrant wines.

Written Notes

The 2018 Quinta do Bomfim from Dow’s comes from a south-facing vineyard, all the fruit vinified on site. Just 965 cases were produced, 3% of the Quinta’s production. It has a compelling bouquet with intense blackberry, raspberry, clove, pain d’épice and light sage scents, complex and very engaging. The palate is well balanced with a firm backbone a tangy, white pepper infused entry. There is admirable tension thanks to the acidity and the finish feels very controlled and focused, peppermint lingering on the aftertaste. This is a very impressive Bomfim for long-term ageing.

Juicy and sappy, with tasty kirsch, blackberry paste and fig compote notes infused with anise and violet. Long finish pulls in a brambly edge while letting the fruit keep the upper hand. Solidly built. Best from 2030 through 2045. 400 cases made, 150 cases imported.
