100 POINTS

What a Vintage Port. Dark ruby center, with a dark garnet edge. Aromas of flowers, blackberry and licorice. Subtle and complex. Wow. What a palate. Full, concentrated and rich, yet balanced and beautiful. Solid and sleepy. Still not giving all it has to give. This is just coming around. Gorgeous and classy. Love it.

Fonseca has belonged to the first rank of Vintage Port producers since the mid-nineteenth century. Fonseca Vintage Ports are noted for their luscious fruitiness which develops great opulence and complexity with age. Wines born of inspired winemaking and a thorough understanding of viticulture and terroir, they appeal, perhaps more than any other house's Vintage Ports, to the enthusiast and connoisseur.

Wine Information

The year started with a wet winter and cold spring with some frost as late as May.  The grapes were slow to mature during the cool summer but September was extremely hot and by the end of the month the grapes were ready to pick.   Musts were reported as having high acidities and the cool weather at the beginning of October produced long fermentations with plenty of extraction.  The year was declared by nearly all the major shippers.

Written Notes

In the lead-up to the lunch at which the wines here were presented (and a few have crept in elsewhere – while I learnt the TB ropes), I spoke to one friend, asking if I could contribute – two friends were planning the entire thing. I said I had a bottle of this particulr port that I felt should be drunk soon. By one of those weird coincidences, this was the very port that they had planned to serve. So I brought my bottle along. My friend turned up with his, but mine actually looked in better shape, so we went with it. Decanted around 4-5 hours pre drinking (it could have handled more). It offered all one could wish for in a classic vintage port from a top year. Finely balanced, fragrant, just enough sweetness but a balanced wine that lingered and lingered. Notes of leather and spice. Very good length. Very fine VP that was drinking delightfully. 95
