The Story

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame is name in honour of the famed and undoubted Champagne pioneer, widow Clicquot. Widowed at the tender age of 28, Madame Clicquot continued her late husband's work and is the sole reason why her Champagne house is held in the high esteem that it is today. The 1998 La Grande Dame is a wine of pure beauty and power.

Vintage 2004

A great example of how large yields do not necessarily mean poor quality in Champagne. As a reaction to the previous year's low yields, the vines produced one of the largest crops on record. The growing season proceeded without major difficulties but the bumper crop called for bud thinning. August brought about cooler weather and some rains, increasing the risk of rot. Written Notes

Seven years on lees, with this bottle disgorged Nov/Dec 2010. A beautifully elegant style, especially in terms of the VC portfolio. Fresh and clean. Pears, wet stone, white peach, a little hint of brioche. Balance and intensity, freshness and power underneath. Bright acidity. Citrus and raspberry. Amazing complexity. Finesse. Depth and that ever-present power. Dominant pinot noir. 61% with 39% chardonnay, all Grand Cru. Dominique says the grapes used are selected “for minerality and whiteness”. He wants the “smell of the chalk of the Grand Crus”. They use mostly their own vineyards, with about 25% purchased from growers. Will get even better. Stunning. 97

A wine with depth but also honed, precise, in harmony. Voluptuous delicacy with meringue notes. Subtle nuances evoke distant lands – mint tea, lime, kumquat and exotic fruits such as pineapple and candied ginger.
