How does Veuve Clicquot’s cellarmaster Dominique Demarville do it? This high wire Prestige Cuvée act walks the tightrope with such confidence and ease. Unusually for the house, the blend is just 53% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay but like every great champagne its ‘ying and yang’ are in perfect symmetry. So we have the volume, structure and depth balanced by the cut and thrust of the acidity. On the palate are layers of cream, honey, nuts, brio...

The Story

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame is name in honour of the famed and undoubted Champagne pioneer, widow Clicquot. Widowed at the tender age of 28, Madame Clicquot continued her late husband's work and is the sole reason why her Champagne house is held in the high esteem that it is today. The 1998 La Grande Dame is a wine of pure beauty and power.

A majority blend of Pinot Noir, the vintage conditions are clearly visible in the glass with flavo...

Vintage 2006

A cold winter and springtime frosts laid the foundations for this vintage of abundant yields (12,997 kg/ha). Uneventful flowering was followed by exceptionally hot and sunny weather, which lasted until August. A dank August left producers fearful but fortunately warm, bright conditions in September redressed the balance. Harvest commenced on September 9th, producing grapes high in sugar level but notably low on acidity. The general health of t...

Written Notes

Glossy and gold with glints of copper. Initially mineral and floral, notes of peony give way to peach and pear, and finally aromas of toasted almonds, nougat and preserved lemon.Full, structured and silky, a chalky minerality reveals a long, crisp finish. This vintage is an opulent and elegant Grade Dame.

An almost equal blend of pinot noir (53%) and chardonnay (47%), the 2006 vintage reflects the turbulent conditions of that year’s growing season. The pinot noir was sourced from the Montagne de Reims villages of Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy and Verzenay, while the chardonnay came from the celebrated Côte des Blancs villages of Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.

Inside Information

La Grande Dame 2006 is an exclusive blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from eight classic Grands Crus. In line with the style of the house, which is Pinot Noir dominant, the blend is 53% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay. The wine has intense color with golden glints and very fine sparkling bubbles. Each cuvée of La Grande Dame has exceptional aging potential. The current vintage 2006 can be enjoyed now until 2025.
