Stunning aromas of black currant, stone, blueberry and licorice. Also iodine. Floral. Perfumed. Full body, fantastic density of fruit and ripe tannins. It goes on for minutes on the palate with such energy and focus. Touch of chewiness on the nish. A complex and complete wine that delivers a generosity with firmness. Drink in 2021 but already a classic.”

The Story

Seña is an authentic Chilean blend made from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot varieties. The Carmenere variety adds an evident Chilean personality to the wine.

To maximize quality, the fruit is handpicked exclusively in the morning and brought to the winery in 12 kg boxes. The grapes are then carefully selected on sorting tables and all extraneous plant material, leaves, and stems are removed to ensure fine fruit character in the final blend. The grapes are mostly fermented in stainless steel tanks at temperatures ranging from 24° to 30°C (75°–86°F), depending on the variety and seasonal conditions (microbiological load, and alcohol potential), to achieve the desired level of extraction. 6% of the must are fermented in first-use French oak barrels to increase the complexity of the blend. During fermentation, 3 pump overs are performed daily at 0.5 to 1.5 times the tank volume, in accordance with the degree of extraction desired.

Total maceration time range from 20 to 33 days for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carmenere and 6 to 8 days for Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, depending on the development of each individual lot.

The new wine then racked to 100% French new oak barrels from a selection of the finest cooperages is aged for 22 months, during which time most of the malolactic fermentation takes place.

Seña 2015 displays an intense red hue with a strikingly purple edge. The aroma is full and intense, tending towards black fruits of cherry and walnut with a touch of cabernet spice inherent to the variety. The palate follows the aroma with the same complex dark fruits and lasting structure throughout. Flavors include nutmeg from the fruit and caramel from a touch of oak. The mouth is seamless throughout, with lush and intense fruits in the mid pallet followed by ripe and opulent tannins on the finish. An elegant, long and supple wine with a perfect balance between tannin, acid and fruit.

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle and in an perfect condition. Colour is cherry red, and looking clear and medium. On the nose it is youthful, refined and closed. The taste is fruity, fresh, robust, warming, with medium tannin, with drying tannins, and average in acidity, medium-bodied, developing and the palate is sharp. On the palate it is layered and has mineral, spice, cherry and blackberry flavours. The finish is medium long and a bit too neutral .. This wine is nice but not special. I paid around 100-200€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 5-10€ years and decant at least 15min before tasting. Too expensive for quality. I do not recommend it.

Released September 2017. 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Carmenère, 3% Cabernet Franc, 12% Malbec, 7% Petit Verdot. TA 6 g/l, pH 3.55, RS 2.21 g/l. A dry growing season with average rainfall meant steady flowering, fruit set and healthy fruit conditions. Hand-picked and sorted by hand. Stainless-steel fermentation, three pumpovers per day. Total maceration time ranged from 15–30 days for the Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, and 8–12 days for the Petit Verdot. The final blend was racked to French oak barrels (65% new) and aged for 22 months, during which time malolactic fermentation and stabilisation occurred naturally.
Mid crimson. Aromatic and almost Margaux-like. Sweet and polished. Easy to appreciate. Not one of the most concentrated vintages. But very appetising and fairly forward.

As a comparison to the 2014 vintage of this wine, the 2015 Seña resulted in 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Carmenere, 12% Malbec, 7% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, with now 12% of the wine matured in new Stockinger oak foudres and the rest in barrique for some 22 months. 2015 might have been a slightly warmer year, but the resulting wine is lower in alcohol and higher in acidity, which provide for a more vibrant mouthfeel and a more focused expression of the character of the place. This vintage has half a degree less alcohol, and the acidity is a little more pungent; and, the amount of wine in foudre seems to help the oak to show better integrated. This is dry, nicely textured, and the replacement of the Merlot by Malbec seems to have also added to the refinement of the tannins that are super-elegant. 66,000 bottles were filled in February 2017.

I had the chance to taste a vertical of Seña wines starting from the 2009 vintage, and I have to admit that 2015 was the most comprehensive that I tried.  Not only does it have a full dark fruited side, but also a lovely acidity and well-balanced finish. There is a great complexity, complemented by long lasting flavors and a heighten elegance. The tannins are still very firm, yet refined. This 2015 Seña can compete with any of the top red wines from the Old World!  Drinking window 2023-2045. Blend: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Carmenere, 12% Malbec, 7% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

Inside Information

Sena is the peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings. I will not enter into a discussion about that here, although it must be said that Sena is an impressive wine. Tasting through this mini-vertical from almost the first vintage, I did find a distinct improvement from 2007 onwards. While I understand that older vintages have their share of plaudits, I discerned more complexity and vitality as well as finer integration of oak on newer vintages, as if more thought had gone into the wines.
