The Story

The 47 hectares which surround the Château, the heart of the estate, are called "l'Enclos". Only the grapes from these 47 ha make the "Grand Vin de Château Latour". The vines in this vineyard are very old, some of them being centenarian. This "Enclos" benefits from a very unique terroir that combines an optimized sub-soil nutrition for the vines, the Gironde river which tempers extreme weather conditions, and a typical Médoc climate, largely influenced by the Atlantic ocean, which allows the grapes to reach maturation under favourable conditions.

Written Notes

This vintage was a challenging one at Latour. The flowering period in June was unproblematic and July was very hot, with a temperature 4° C above the seasonal average. But the weather was stormy and humidity remained high causing problems with cryptogamic diseases and black rot. The unpredictable and humid weather continued in August, lowering expectations for the harvest. But in September the  fine weather finally set in for a period of three months: the spread of rot was halted and even regressed. From then on, ripening progressed perfectly. The vintage started on 22 September and continued until 11 October.

Moderately rich purple colour. Mature nose of cassis, undergrowth and attractive spiciness. Despite the difficult conditions and attractive elegance and harmony was captured in the 1983 vintage. Less concentration that in most Latours but the wine has charm and moderate tannin and refreshing acidity. Touches of oak and spiciness on the long aftertaste. A delicate wine at a perfect age for drinking. Will not benefit much from further maturation but will keep for another decade.

Good looking normal size bottle and in an perfect condition. Colour is ruby red, and looking clear, healthy and full. On the nose it is intense, complex, refined, rich and tempting. The taste is rich, ripe, elegant, refined, warming, with low tannin ., with silky tannins, and low in acidity, with perfectly balanced and multi-dimensional structure. On the palate it is layered and has blackcurrant, blackberry, cassis, caramel, chocolate, tobacco and toasty flavours. The finish is long and extensive. This wine is sexy, wonderful and fine. I paid around 200-500€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years and decant at least 5min before tasting. Good value for money. I do recommend.

Bottom neck fill. Ruby, garnet rim. Scented, bit tight, cassis and red berries nose. Touch of tobacco, ads with air. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, elegant, fruity and nuanced, refreshing, lovely balance, could have more intensity, long. 93

"Medium intense, ruby colour. Ripe black fruit nose, smoky, floral and plummy nose. Dry, medium-bodied, firm, less appealing fruit but still intense. Savoury, moderately long finish. Mouthdrying finish.

Decant for 1 hour. Ready but will keep another 15 years.
