The Story

The red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. Serge Hochar, who has been involved with the property since 1959, states that the Cabernet Sauvignon provides "the bones and the skeleton to the wine, the Carignan the flesh and muscle and the Cinsault the silky smooth finesse".

Musar wines are unique in that Hochar blends the varietals only after they have spent three years in barrels and then waits a further four years befor...

Wine Information

he quality of the 1995 harvest was exceptional but the quantity was reduced by 30% as rain and hail in the spring affected the flowering. Fermentation progressed smoothly and in some cases lasted until the following March and April 1996!

A very important vintage with immense power and concentration of fruit – fabulous colour and incredible ageing potential. An aromatic nose – meaty and savoury with Christmas spices following through to a ri...

Written Notes

Fill bottom neck, and that was one of the very top fills in the case, many at top shoulder. I found this a bit worrying for such a young age, but anyway. This bottle turned out very fine. Bright ruby, thin brick rim, some VA, but not excessively for Musar, leather, anise, plums and figs. Evolved style, drinking very well now. Acidity on the fresh side, especially with a somewhat lean body, but mouth-feel is rounded enough, it's leaner towards a slightly sharp finish. Tannins ripe, good length. 90

1995 Chateau Musar rouge: Thicker color, much more mature than the 1998. Very forthcoming nose, mature, no longer a virgin. Delectably sweet fruit on the palate. Open. Much longer than the 1998. Striking VA [which I love]. Transformed, interesting. It’s telling a story [which we didn’t experience with the younger ones]. Glorious length. High Brett [which I love]. Mouth explosion. This wine satisfies the brain, heart and soul. It is like being hit with a huge velvet boxing glove. "It grabs you and tells you something about the future” was the comment of one of the other tasters. As it evolved in the glass, it developed a burlap bag style of old cheese, perhaps Cheddar, and developed dairy cow shed aromas. Great wine.

Moderately light, bright, ruby red colour. Restrained, very volatile with hints of yogurt and chocolate. Dry, crisp acidity, medium-bodied, supple tannins, mouthwatering, ripe fruits with medium intensity – cranberries and cherries. Short finish though. Lacking substance for longer ageing, maximum 3-4 years.
