The Story

The epitome of bottle-aged Port.

Opulent wild blackberries, fragrance of violets, scents of flowers and wild herbs, rockrose, mint, hints of spice, bottled in their time capsule and left to mull over for years. The finish is long and persistent. It never really finishes, in fact, because just as it starts to, you’ll take another sip. We are not satisfied with anything less than perfection. And nor should you be. So, we only ‘declare’ a Vint...

Written Notes

Cockburn has historically declared vintages less often, selecting only those years that fit their more elegant style - from which this very old looking bottle gave an excellent performance. Decanted three hours. Impressive, dark colour, slightly darker and deeper than Graham’s. The huge, sweet nutty nose exposed plentiful aromas of liquorice, spices, black fruits, and white chocolate. Great balance. It exhibited rich, sweet, medium-bodied flavours, great elegance and length finishingwith grace. Excellent bottle, but perhaps it does not quite possess the richness, complexity and fragrance of the 1908. This surprisingly youthful Cockburn will provide impressive drinking for years to come, although it is perfectnow.

This wine has a legendary reputation as one of the greatest Vintage Ports ever produced.  It is clearly oustanding, although I am not sure it is Cockburn's greatest.  It is a sexy, elegant wine and drinking extremely well now.  Medium garnet with a red center, very aromatic plum nose, medium bodied, with delicious plum flavours and an elegant balance of silky tannins.

This was a legendary vintage about which Ernest Cockburn wrote: just before 27 September it rained, so the vintage started in early October. The grapes were ripe and the weather hot and perfect. The lagares took a good deal of work.’ (This last was a euphemism meaning that the grapes were trodden for an extended period resulting in complex, dry wines – as opposed to the very sweet but slightly simple wines which ‘did not take much work’). The 1927s were already deemed ‘excellent’. Between 20,000 and 30,000 cases of this wine were made!
Exceptionally deep brownish tawny. Smells quite different from the others. Passion fruit – underripe Tinta Barroca? Transparent and satisfying and very lip smacking. Such power and charm! Very clean on the finish. Perhaps some of the grapes were not fully ripe but this has led to an exceptional wine. Not classic but exceptional and showing no signs of age. Revitalising. Transparent and a lively balance between sweetness, acidity and a refreshing dry finish.
