Wynnsday 2016 Collection celebrates two contrasting vintages

The 2016 Wynnsday collection features six wines that proudly showcase the Wynns ‘house-style’ from two contrasting vintages.

The 2016 Wynnsday collection includes:

  • Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 RRP $44.99
  • V&A Lane Shiraz 2014 RRP $59.99
  • V&A Lane Cabernet Shiraz 2014 RRP $59.99
  • Harold Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 RRP $79.99
  • Michael Shiraz 2013 $149.99 RRP
  • John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 $149.99 RRP

Wynns winemaker Sue Hodder says the 2016 collection perfectly depicts the Wynns style, the vintage conditions and the character of great terra rossa.

“In 2013 we chose several of our older, and beloved , classic terra rossa soil vineyards for our John Riddoch, Michael and Single Vineyard wines. It is pleasing to acknowledge these special parcels from a great year. Good ripening conditions after a wet winter, resulted in wines with fine but abundant tannins.

“In contrast, the very wet winter and slightly above average summer temperatures of 2014 combined with very low yields. The 2014 Black Label Shiraz and Cabernet and also the two V and A Lane Wines are by comparison, more linear and medium bodied” she adds.

Wynns viticulturist Allen Jenkins reflects on the two contrasting vintages that make up the 2016 Wynnsday collection.

“Vintage 2014 was ‘classic’ Coonawarra, with lower yields and good quality arising from the long cool ripening post veraison; the resulting wines are finely structured and medium bodied. Our 2013 vintage saw even and long ripening, with low rainfall and moderate yields delivering full fruit flavours and balanced acidity” he says.

History

Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the Coonawarra region’s pre-eminent wine producer, with the largest holding of the region’s best and longest established vineyard sites.

The first vineyards were planted in 1891, by Scottish pioneer John Riddoch as he recognised the potential of a small strip of fertile red soil, the terra rossa, in the far south east of South Australia. What is now Wynns Coonawarra Estate’s famous triple-gable winery was built in 1896. In 1951 Melbourne wine merchant Samuel Wynn purchased the winery and vineyards, convinced of the region’s potential to produce top-quality wines. Samuel’s son David was the driving force behind the purchase and gradually assumed control of the operation, releasing the first wine under the Wynns Coonawarra Estate banner in 1952.

Today the wines are regarded as benchmarks for the district, lauded for their consistent quality and depth of flavour. Under Sue Hodder, who has been Senior Winemaker since 1998, Wynns Coonawarra Estate produces an annual collection of wines. In vintages when the grapes are deemed exceptional, two flagship reds are also made: the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon and the Michael Shiraz.

Vineyards

Coonawarra - which is an Aboriginal word meaning 'honeysuckle' - is an isolated region 450 kilometresaway from Melbourne and 380 kilometers from Adelaide.
Coonawarra is renowned for its unique geological and climatic features - ideal for growing vines bearing the highest quality grapes.

TERRA ROSSA Coonawarra's fame comes mostly from a freakish natural phenomenon called the terra rossa. Meaning literally 'red earth', the terra rossa is a low, cigar-shaped ridge of soil some 15 kilometres long and up to 1kilometre wide.

Terra rossa topsoil is rich and free draining but thin - from just 5 centimetres to 100 centimetres deep. It is one of the best soils for growing vines in Australia; ideal for creating small, well coloured berries that develop in optimal sunlight. The end result is a yield of intensely flavoured grapes that are perfectly suited for making premium wine.

CLIMATE

Like all great wine regions of the world, Coonawarra'sclimate is cool and marginal. It is South Australia's southernmost wine region, positioned just 80kilometres from the chilly southern ocean and cold Antarctic winds.
The vines are assured a long, cool ripening period that builds up the intensity of flavours slowly in the grape and ensures a balanced acidity. The resulting wines will always be among Australia's finest for their richness, intensity, flavour and longevity.

Winemaking

SUE HODDER / SENIOR WINEMAKER

“I’m proud of the responsibility I have for maintaining the quality of a range that represents Coonawarra as a region as much as they represent Wynns Coonawarra Estate … It relates to being a custodian of a great winemaking tradition.”

Sue Hodder is one of Australia’s best-known winemakers and this year celebrates her 23rd vintage withWynns – making wine

from wonderful, expressive fruit grown in the heart of the terra rossa.

Sue commenced her career as a viticulturist. Sue believes her early viticultural training – assessing vines, analysing mature fruit and tasting the finished wine – gave her an invaluable insight into the importance

of the vineyard in quality winemaking. Sue brings valuable experience with vintages in other noted wine regions around the world and has judged extensively in Regional, National and International wine shows.

ALLEN JENKINS
VITICULTURIST

"It is incredibly rewarding to lead Wynnstalented viticultural team. We have a profound respect for our heritage, each other, and the precious environment that isCoonawarra. There is an intense focus on the needs of the vine, on implementing new and courageous viticultural techniques, and onunravelling the endlessly complex web of interactions involved in growing the perfect grape."

Allen’s obsession with viticulture began thirty years ago, when he combined qualifications in agriculture and education to teach viticulturalcomponents of the winemaking and

marketing courses at RoseworthyCollege. In recognition of Allen Jenkins' contribution to viticulture atWynns he was announced as joint recipient of the

Gourmet Traveller WINE’s Winemaker of the Year with Wynns Winemaker Sue Hodder in 2010.
