The Story

The Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz was named after original plans for the site which was to be a cemetery within Pokolbin, however it was never used as such. The first single vineyard selection for the Graveyard Vineyard was in 1983.

Originally planted with Shiraz and Cabernet, the heavy clay soil resulted in vintages of low yield but with extraordinary concentration of flavour in the berries, providing a distinctive and premium wine style.

Wine Information

Understandably some excitement surrounding the release of this wine. Being awarded 98 points on Wine Front not long after bottling is high praise. Tasting the wine, it is easy to see why. A wine of great poise, sharing a pedigree with the celebrated 2018, 2014, 1998 and 1986 Graveyard vintages. This is a very, very good Shiraz. Our third consecutive wet year, La Nina continued to make herself known through the first three quarters of 2022, wit...

Vintage 2021

2021 Barossa Valley Vintage Report

Following two particularly dry seasons, many were hoping for Mother Nature to be much kinder, and mostly she was. Winter rainfall in 2020 recorded 148mm, the same as winter 2019, (22% below average). The majority of this rainfall was in the latter half of August, with the rain continuing into September and October. This was ideal timing to replenish soil profiles to field capacity moving into budburst in O...

Written Notes

The 2021 vintage in the Hunter Valley will be remembered as one of the region’s most balanced and high-quality seasons of the past decade. Good winter and spring rainfall replenished soils and established healthy canopies. A mild summer followed, marked by cooler-than-average temperatures and an absence of extreme heat, allowing for long, even ripening. The result was fruit of exceptional purity, vibrant acidity, and fine tannin structure—a classic year for Hunter Shiraz.

For the famed Graveyard Vineyard, 2021 offered the ideal conditions for producing a wine of refinement, freshness, and superb aromatic detail, in line with the estate’s most elegant vintages.

The Graveyard Shiraz 2021 is a beautifully poised, finely textured wine—elegant, savoury, and quietly powerful, showcasing everything that makes this vineyard one of Australia’s greatest sites for Shiraz.

The nose opens with lifted aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, and mulberry, layered with distinctive Hunter notes of dried roses, peppercorn, and subtle charcuterie. Beneath the brightness lies a complex undercurrent of earth, graphite, sage, and polished oak spice, revealing increasing depth with time in the glass.

On the palate, the wine is silky, medium-bodied, and impeccably balanced, a superb reflection of the cooler 2021 season. A core of red and black fruits—raspberry, cherry, and blackberry skin—is framed by finely woven, powdery tannins and a precise line of natural acidity. Savoury nuances of black tea, olive tapenade, smoked herbs, and dusty earth emerge through the mid-palate, building into a long, graceful, mineral-infused finish.

A magnificent Graveyard—refined rather than overtly powerful, capturing the vineyard’s signature savouriness with exceptional purity and length. It will develop beautifully over the next 15–25 years, gaining complexity and secondary nuance without losing its elegant structure.
