A quintessential Hunter Valley medium-bodied Shiraz with a very appealing, medium-density colour and youthful purple tint on the rim. The nose is fragrant with lifted red fruit, pastille and subtle spice aromas. Ripe cherry flavours and soft tannins feature on the palate with a fine, long finish. A perfect Hunter Valley Shiraz for the medium to long term.
Brokenwood has managed the Mistress Block Vineyard and made wine from it since the late 1980s. The vineyard is now owned by Iain Riggs AM and Sally Margan, with the vines well over 50 years old and planted on a steep, east-facing slope. It is a perfect site to avoid the hot summer heat. The dark loam soil absorbs the heat, and the grapes are in shade for the latter part of the afternoon.
The team at Brokenwood noted that the 18’s ‘have finesse and tannins’, while the 19’s ‘are a little more extracted’. That might be best reflected by the two wines from the Mistress Block. The 2019 has great purple colour. More firmness, more austerity than the ’18. A hint of grapeseed character. Black fruits. Cherries and spices. Grip and firm structure. Undoubtedly offering a good future. For me, excellent but marginally pipped by the 2018. No shame in that.
