The Story

Marqués de Riscal Reserva wines are basically made from grapes from tempranillo vines planted before de 70’s, grown in the best clay-limestone soils of the Rioja Alavesa. This variety withstands oak- and bottle ageing well thanks to its good balance of acidity and fine tannin. The Graciano and Mazuelo varieties, whose presence in the blend does not exceed 10%, provide crispness and a lively colour. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 26ºC and the maceration time is never more than 12 days.

Riscal reservas spend around two years in American Oak barrels, producing a wine which corresponds to the classic Rioja style: fresh, fine, elegant and very suitable for laying down for many years. Before release for sale it spends a minimum of one year rounding off in the bottle; time enough to show how much complexity tempranillo is able to achieve.

Excellent vintage in RiojaThe wine remaining in our cellar from that vintage is in perfect condition and still has long ageing potential – certainly 10 to 15 years. Nevertheless, you must take into account the fact that the bottles we keep in our cellars are in an ideal situation, wich is no doubt different from the conditions in which the bottle acquired by Mr. Dillon has been preserved. Variations in temperatura and humidity, journeys and movement, etc. cut back the ageing potential to a great extent.

Written Notes

The third wine in this incredible, opening flight was another great nose, ‘Spain?’ I guessed. There was big-time coffee bean here, in an espresso ice cream direction. Truffle, chocolate and black fire emerged, and while the palate was again milder than the nose, it was still delicious. The nose became super smoky in a wet tobacco, leafy way. The palate had a hint of metal on the finish; it was pretty but not magnificent. Super Mario found ‘almond butter,’ and SuperSomm added ‘a bit volatile.’ It was a 1925 Marques de Riscal Rioja (93).

Deep bright orange-hued colour. Strong, dark fruity nose, menthol, cassis, toast and liquorice. Long savoury and super fresh palate. Very Cabernet in character. Irony taste in the finish.
  • 95p
Dark garnet red colour with mahagony coloured hue. Mautre nose with hints of prunes and molasses, honey and cardamom, On the palate well structured with hints of sweetness, fine tannins and good aromatic length.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is brick red, and looking dark and deep. On the nose it is open, intense, ripe, seductive, generous and complex. The taste is focused, elegant, toasty, firm, refined, and dry, with high tannin ., with silky tannins, drying tannins, and average in acidity, full-bodied, with balanced structure and mature. On the palate it is layered and has mint, blackcurrant, spice and smoky flavours. The finish is long and vibrant. This wine is wonderful and impressive. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years and decant at least 15min before tasting.
