The Story

Marqués de Riscal Reserva wines are basically made from grapes from tempranillo vines planted before de 70’s, grown in the best clay-limestone soils of the Rioja Alavesa. This variety withstands oak- and bottle ageing well thanks to its good balance of acidity and fine tannin. The Graciano and Mazuelo varieties, whose presence in the blend does not exceed 10%, provide crispness and a lively colour. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 26ºC and the maceration time is never more than 12 days.

Riscal reservas spend around two years in American Oak barrels, producing a wine which corresponds to the classic Rioja style: fresh, fine, elegant and very suitable for laying down for many years. Before release for sale it spends a minimum of one year rounding off in the bottle; time enough to show how much complexity tempranillo is able to achieve.

Written Notes

Long vegetative cycle of 212 days. Strong northern winds. Cool summer. Aged in barrique for 46 months.
Lots of curry, very spicy, aromas of meat stew, lots of polished leather and… sunflower seed? Turmeric. Brings to mind specific dishes, like a rabbit stew with black olives or a pigeon with cinnamon from chef Abraham García from Viridiana in Madrid. Wines like this with a delirious nose make you write delirious notes, don’t they? Clove, cinnamon, very, very spicy. It is still very powerful in the mouth. Delicious and very gastronomic. (LG)

Deep browing colour. Particular nose, not fully clean, potato cellar, mushrooms. Zesty palalte, big budy but cvery fresh acidity. Irony finish. Faded fruit.

Dark garnet red colour with brick red hue. Ethereal nose with hints of mint and eucalyptus, backed by dried fruit and mild spices. On the palate well structured with ripe tannins and fresh acidity, good aromatic length.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is brick red, and looking dark and medium. On the nose it is mature and forward. The taste is and dry, with high tannin ., with drying tannins, and low in acidity, medium-bodied, mature and the palate is modest. On the palate it is layered and has smoky, toasty, plum and licorice flavours. The finish is short and a bit too too tannic .. This wine is wine for food. Decant at least 15min before tasting.
